Onlyone species of albatross, the largest and rarest, in the northern Pacific region shows that plumage, but it was so far off, did I dare call it? I had one more glimpse, then, my heart racing, I pressed my radio to make the call and set birders running from all decks of the ship. Thank goodness, it banked in our direction and kept coming.

A more precarious breeding site could hardly be imagined. Torishima (literally bird island) is the tiny 394 m high above water portion of an active submarine volcano in the Pacific Ocean some 600 km south of Tokyo, at the southern tip of the Izu Island chain. With a circumference of 6.6 km and an area of just 4.79 km2 the island is now an uninhabited gem, and virtually impossible to access. This remote location situated in the annual Pacific typhoon track makes it a perfect home for the Storm Riders, yet 65 years ago they were declared extinct.

Dr Yamashina estimated that only about 2,000 birds were on the island in 1930, fewer in 1932 and fewer than a hundred in 1933. A last minute scramble for feathers before a hunting ban could be enforced seems to have been the penultimate nail in their coffin, the final one coming with the catastrophic volcanic eruptions of 1939, when the island was evacuated, and 1941 when much of the island was covered with new lava.

By spring 1949, when Oliver Austin, Jr., ornithologist of the General Headquarters Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, sailed south to the Ogasawara Islands via Torishima, he found no albatrosses there, during what should have been their breeding season. The golden gooney had gone; it was presumed extinct. And there the story of another species driven to extinction by human greed, expansion or resource extraction might so easily have ended, had this particular island species not been a long-lived oceanic storm rider.

Historically there may have been as many as fourteen breeding colonies south of Japan and in the East China Sea, but like that on Torishima these colonies were easily raided, depleted, then exterminated by feather and egg collectors. Fossil evidence from Bermuda suggests that prehistorically the species even ranged into the Atlantic. The current, anomalous North Atlantic gap in albatross distribution may once have been filled by the gorgeous Golden Gooney.

The "Stormrider" is a round-pin, six-channel single fin, based on late 70s Australian designs. Not so much a replica as an interpretation of general characteristics, the board is for clean-line, "power-flow" surfing exemplified by the likes of MP, Wayne Lynch, and Terry Richardson. "Foiled thickness" provides optimal paddling, and the wide-point forward plan shape allows pivoting turns in the pocket and driving carves as well. Channels free up the tail, and a Greenough 4A by True Ames is the recommended fin.

As the name implies this rugged style has weathered many a stormy situation. It was designed for covert carry or outside carry. It has proven highly field worthy through many years. Utilized by military, law enforcement, and special security teams, this is a no-nonsense tool supporting a diverse group of situations.

Many years ago renowned adventurer Jeff Randall, took the TOPS Storm Rider and the Hawk Recon into the jungles of the Amazon. In a photo filled story appearing in Tactical Knives Magazine, Jeff put the knives through their paces.

"The TOPS blade was used to clean and dress food during the 2 week expedition. The edge durability and the "Hunter's Point" served the team well without need for constant field sharpening. TOPS "Hawk Recon" and "Storm Rider" are both super strong working knives for those that expect the most from their cutting tool."

One parental character is verbally abusive and often hostile toward her child, but the majority of adult characters are largely present, engaged, and concerned. Characters are generally well developed and exhibit relatable positive and negative attributes.

There's brief peril when a man and boy's plane goes missing during a storm. The two are shown injured and bleeding, but both recover. Additionally, a group of people are pursued by wolves in the mountains.

Parents need to know that Storm Rider's premise involves a remarried family splitting up due to a father's criminal charges and impending prison sentence and involves a daughter visiting her father in prison and staying with a relative. Overall the film delivers positive messages about perseverance and commitment, but these challenges contribute to heavier themes that make this film best for older kids. When Dani's (Danielle Chuchran) father is sent to jail for securities fraud, she's forced to sell her beloved horse Admiral, separate from her half-brother Jordan, and move out to the sticks to live with a relative. At first, it appears she's lost everything. But with the help of her Uncle Sam (Kevin Sorbo), his friend Jody (Kristy Swanson), and a gift of a mule to train, Dani develops a new sense of the meaning of family, community, and loyalty.

STORM RIDER is a heartfelt drama set in an idyllic, rustic backdrop that explores family struggles through a strong-willed female lead character. It shows positive mentoring and strong messages about family, loyalty, and perseverance. Unfortunately, the overwrought score means it's exceptionally heavy-handed, even when it doesn't have to be, which gives it a sentimentality that drips with every turn. Plus, the imprisoned father and separated family give this an overall heavy theme. Kids will appreciate the horse- and mule-training and the countryside, and parents can appreciate the positive depictions of outdoor activities, goal-setting, honoring commitments, and the way families can recombine in adversity for the better.

The user rises into the air while spinning and raising dust. This dust forms a storm, which looks like the user is riding it, giving it the name. While fully above the storm, the user sends two blue waves by swinging his legs. By these waves and the dusty storm, the shoot is stopped and the user catches the ball.

Stormriders, or Riders, were a race of beings which lived in the deep ocean trench of the Ocean of Storms between Quon Tali and Korel.[1][2] They were isolationist and disliked foreigners and were known to attack ships crossing through their territory. For over four thousand years they lived in a constant state of war with the residents of Korel who had built the enormous Stormwall along the shore to protect themselves from Stormrider attack.

Fair skinned, with pale hair resembling the Tiste Andii,[3] they wore what appeared to be armour, which gleamed with sapphire and rainbow opalescence.[4] It shone like frost and they carried jagged-edged lances.[1] They could ride waves, which would curl into horse-like shapes beneath them.[5]

Their power was of sea and ice and seemed to be connected to Omtose Phellack[citation needed], however Ieleen, the blind Falaran Sea Witch and pilot of the Silver Dawn, explained that, like the Crippled God, the Stormriders were from another realm.[6] Their sorcerers were called Wandwielders by the Stormguard.[7]

Before Bottle joined the Malazan Military, he sold dolls to sailors in Jakata that were used as propitiations to appease the Stormriders. Fiddler thought such gifts had not worked in years. But Bottle said the strange beings seemed to like the dolls and they sometimes worked, which was more often than most types of propitiations.[10]

Bottle, Koryk, Cuttle, and Smiles gossiped over Captain Faradan Sort's reputed history serving on the Stormwall against the "demonic warriors" of the Stormriders. Smiles thought them old fishers' tales, but Cuttle claimed to have seen them himself when plying their waters. He described how the sailors of his ship had slit the throats of six goats to paint the water with their blood and appease the Stormriders. The rite had failed until they had thrown the cabin boy over the side of the ship as well.[11]
