Hi all,

First of all, thanks for providing this fantastic resource.

Second, I am teaching an MSc course in quantitative text analysis at UCL and am hoping to use the Guardian API as a teaching example next week. I see that you have a "student project" option on the developer registration form (for which, many thanks again). My plan is to have students use the API to retrieve a sample of articles which they will go on to analyse. Can you let me know if there is any reason from your side which would prevent me from doing this? Similarly, if there are any particular restrictions I should be getting the students to observe, I'd appreciate you letting me know.

Third, is there a way to track the current usage for a given developer key? For instance, I see that usage is restricted to 5000 calls per day and a maximum of 12 per second, but it would be helpful to be able to track how many calls have been made from a given key on a given day etc (even if this is only approximate).

Thanks again,

Jack

Hello Jack,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

There is no problem with using the API in the way you described as long as any resulting projects will not be commercialised. In case of commercialisation, the student would need to reach out to us for a Commercial key.

In terms of rate limits, we have recently revised out rate limits for developer keys so we would encourage you to check the new rate limits. When querying the API, the response headers will include your total rate limits (per day and per minute) as well as your remaining limits (per day and per minute). These will be approximate but will give you an idea about your usage. If you find that you need higher rate limits you can reach out to us and we will try to accommodate that.

Best regards and good luck with your course,

The Open Platform Team

Hi all,

I am just coming back to this issue from a couple of years ago! This was a very useful and popular part of my course when I taught it in 2023 and I am hoping to deliver a similar seminar next week. I just wanted to check whether it is still OK to direct my students to use the Guardian API during the seminar? As before, none of the projects are for commercial use, we are simply using the API as a teaching aid.

Thanks in advance,

Jack

Hi Jack,

No problem at all. I hope the seminar goes well!

Best,

Jon.
