Is it possible to get the eyewitness series picture urls from this
api, or is it only really for textual content?

Yes and possibly no.

You can go and get the set of eyewitness pictures, as it is a series, from the world/series/eyewitness item endpoint.
that provides two possible tags, the newspaper book section and the series tag.  The newspaper book section will only have content that was in the newspaper, whereas the series will represent what was in the series in the website (and also the iPad app).

Clicking the red link for the world/series/eyewitness will show you this url: http://explorer.content.guardianapis.com/#/world/series/eyewitness?format=json&order-by=newest where by default you will see each of the pieces of content in date order.  Each one has a web-url, so you can see that the most recent eyewitness picture was at http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/picture/2012/may/30/1

This should give you a url for each eyewitness series picture, but I suspect what you wanted was what we call the media asset, which is the url of the jpg for the image.
For rights reasons, we aren't able to just make those urls publicly available, but we are able to provide them in the API for people who have an agreement with us for syndication (the "partner tier" agreements).
In fact if you do that with your approved tier key, you can get back all of the metadata for the images, i.e who took it, the caption, the copyright and the width and height, but we elide the urls for non-partner keys.

I hope that helps.
