Dear Guardian Open Platform Team,

I have a question about your terms and conditions and have tried reaching out via openpl...@theguardian.com and lice...@theguardian.com. However, neither of these addresses works.

Could you kindly let me know where I can reach out for my question on the terms and conditions?

Kind regards,
Julian

Dear Open Platform API team,

thank you so much for your reply!

I'm a PhD student researching how various actors are trying to shape the policy discourse. For this purpose, I want to use large text datasets from international news sources to perform a comparative analysis using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Discourse Network Analysis.

My question concerns Section 6(g) of the Open Platform Terms and Conditions. This section prohibits using your API content for machine learning, text mining, and data analysis purposes. Given that these methods are central to my academic work, I would like to kindly ask whether it would be possible to be granted an exemption from these specific restrictions under your terms.

I would immensely appreciate your support!

Thank you for considering my request.

Kind regards,
Julian

Dear Open Platform API team,

Thank you for your reply!

I am a PhD student researching how different actors are trying to influence the policy discourse. As part of my research, I am gathering text data from various international news sources to perform a comparative analysis using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Discourse Network Analysis.

My question concerns Section 6(g) of the Open Platform Terms and Conditions. This section prohibits the use of your API content for machine learning, text mining, and data analysis purposes. Given that these methods are central to my academic work, I would like to kindly ask whether it would be possible to be granted an exemption from these specific restrictions under your terms.

Here is an overview of how I plan to use the Guardian’s content:

  • I will be performing automated Named Entity Recognition (NER) and topic modelling on Guardian (and other newspaper) articles to identify key entities (e.g., companies, policymakers, government agencies) and their influence on the policy discourse.
  • My research is strictly non-commercial, and the analysis will be conducted solely for academic purposes.

I would immensely appreciate your help.

Thank you for considering my request.

Kind regards,
Julian
