Next, create a new Color Fill layer by clicking the New Layer button (the plus icon) at the top of the Layer Inspector. Select Color Fill in the pop-up dialog. The Viewer will now have turned grey, and the image will have disappeared. This is because the new Color Fill layer is on top of the green Color Fill layer and the icon image. In the Layer Inspector, move the new layer below the origami_icon layer. Select the new Color Fill layer and set its Opacity property to 0. The Viewer should look as before. Next, double-click in the Patch Editor. A pop-up dialog appears. Type Switch and hit enter. A new, grey, patch will appear.

Kids gather in Taro's studio for a two-hour exploration of the art of origami. First up: using high-tech touchscreens to choose the pattern (a frog, airplane, flowers, a truck). Then, the origami software guides partygoers through the folding steps, and two professional instructors are on hand to help out. Once the basic design is complete, kids decorate their paper creation with stickers, stamps and markers. A table will be set up for cake and refreshments, but you must bring your own. Guided group instruction for guests can be arranged for an additional cost. Ages 5 and up.

During our one-hour virtual classes, our Origami Artist will give a short talk about the history of origami and why it is important today. Students will then have a chance to learn some origami for themselves. With our trained artist, each student will be able to personally create origami that they can keep, using nothing but paper found around your house.

The Bridge to Math: Transforming a flat piece of paper into a three-dimensional figure is a unique exercise in spatial reasoning. What happens when you unfold an origami model? Can you see the symmetry in the crease patterns? Manipulating paper with their hands helps children learn concepts that may otherwise seem abstract. In addition, paper folding allows students to create and manipulate basic geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, and triangles.

Multi-cultural Awareness: Rooted in Asia, origami reflects the ingenuity and aesthetics of Japanese culture. By participating, students gain appreciation of a different culture, perhaps opening a doorway to further exploration and increased tolerance.

Origami Studio has worked with companies across the country to provide unique origami experiences for guests over the last decade. One of the best ways to provide that has been with our origami booths. Because every event is unique, no two origami booths are the same, but they all provide a place where our amazing folders can create awe-inspiring models for your guests to take home.

When people think of origami they often imagine small traditional models, but origami is an incredibly unique and adaptable art form. In fact, using materials as varied as cardboard, foam core, and polypropylene our staff has created models based on origami that would surprise even the most avid folder.

Another way that people take origami to the next level if through sheer size. Oversized origami projects have taken us all over the world, but require months of planning, structural engineering, computer renders, and trial and error to pull off. When done correctly, these models retain the handmade effortless feel of their smaller counterparts, but have much more impact for everyone that gets to interact with them.

Sometimes clients need an incredibly large amount of something folded, but with our experienced and talented team of origami folders, no project is too big. From custom models we designed ourselves, to simple traditional ones, save your fingers and leave it to the professionals.

In addition to classes, Friesen uses his folding skills to create art for events, like birthday parties, bar mitzvahs and weddings. In Brooklyn, he had the opportunity to create exhibits for larger organizations, like The New York Public Library and the Central Park Conservatory. Following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, Friesen worked with Ad Council on an advertisement that featured dollar bills folded into different origami shapes.

At his origami studio in Park Slope, Japanese-born patent lawyer Taro Yaguchi offers students of all ages a place to learn origami skills. With an educational background in mechanical engineering, Yaguchi says origami can help teach children geometric concepts and spatial reasoning.
