Formany (but not all) Canon printers and scanners we can download a proprietary Linux driver from Canon Asia. If a driver was not yet listed in the Canon web search tool linked above we may still find links to the appropriate driver downlaods from the Canon product overview page. Download the Debian package archives to install the proprietary printer drivers with the Ubuntu Software Center by a double click on them.
Note that drivers available there support a series of printers but not a subset of of this series. This is usually indicated by the product numbering (e.g. for a Pixma IP 2820 you will download the driver for the IP2800 series, for a PIXMA MX457 you will need the driver for the MX450 series, etc.)
In case we need a driver that fully supports all printer features there is a commercially available printer driver Turboprint which actually works great but you may not want to support their rather weird and expensive licencing plan (starting from $34 for one computer and two printers with free updates for 6 months only).
If that does not work try executing the install.sh-Script if it is included in the driver .tar.gz-file of your driver (can be downloaded from the Canon Website, Section Drivers). Afterwards try adding the printer from the GUI again, that's what I just did and it works perfectly.
Once the printer and scanner drivers are installed, connect your device to the computer and start Printers utility test if it works. And launch the Simple Scan utility and select your scanner from app menu Documents -> Preferences -> Scan Source to test if the scanner works.
I downloaded the latest driver from the canon website. When I went to install, I got the error message, "An older version of the MF drivers exist in this computer. Uninstall the older version of the MF drivers, and then try to install again." OK, so I went into the programs list and installed the Canon driver and the Canon Toolbox. Right-clicked and removed (uninstalled?) the unknown USB device. Unplugged the USB cable. Rebooted. Still got the same error message when I tried to install the new stuff.
So I searched my C: drive for anything with the word "Canon" and "MF48". I deleted all files except for what was in "Recent" and what was in "C:\windows.old". I want to be able to go back to Windows 7 if necessary. Rebooted even. But still got the older driver error message.
I did get an error message about "Failed to remove package cnxrpua6.inf. Access is denied". That's why I wrote above that maybe the "Remove driver only" option might work better. But the error didn't matter since I was instantly able to install the Canon drivers I had downloaded. No reboot required.
Please right-click on the MF630C Series icons and verify that there are no documents in the queue. If the queue is clear, restart the computer, and then perform the deletion from Print Server Properties again.
When I had Windows 7, I was able to add the scanning component of my multi-function MP990 to Control Panel (Devices and Printers) as a separate device. This enabled Windows Fax and Scan to recognize the scanning component of my MP990 and scan from it.
Recently I did a clean ('custom') install of Windows 8. Unfortunately, I cannot remember how I setup the scanning component of my multi-function MP990 as a separate device, and now Windows Fax and Scan does not recognize that I have a scanner.
Would someone please remind me how to setup the scanning component of my multi-function printer in Devices and Printers so that Windows Fax and Scan will recognize my scanner and scan from it. Many thanks.
From my research I can tell you that this is one of the most frustrating problems with multi-function printers. I am pleased to say that I discovered the solution, after a great deal of experimentation.
If you have already installed the Canon MP990 then it will appear in Devices and Printers as a printer. I discovered that, in my case, the MP990 was only installed as a printer. You want it to be installed as a printer and a scanner.
The Windows Fax and Scan program will often use the WIA drivers, but may have access to the TWAIN drivers as well. To ensure that the scanner drivers are installed properly, check the following path: C:/Windows/TWAIN_32. You should see a folder for the Canon printer as well as a file called wiatwain.ds. If these items are not in the TWAIN_32 folder, reinstall the drivers. If they are, then I recommend contacting Microsoft for additional help with setting up the Fax and Scan program to recognize your scanner.
Fortunately there is another way! We created our software, VueScan, to be a solution to that problem. Instead of needing to download a driver from the manufacturer and a software to run the scanner you can download one small file from us, install it on your computer, and within 60 seconds you should be able to press the Scan button within VueScan and be up and running again.
The LiDE scanner series began with scanners based on the National Semiconductor LM98XX chipsets, and were widely sold between 1998 and 2001. These included the N650U, N670U, N1220U, LiDE 20, LiDE 25 and LiDE 30. These were USB 1.1 scanners powered by the USB cable, and while they were portable, they were also fairly slow.
Canon began releasing their CanoScan series in 2004 with the 8000F and in subsequent years the 9900F, 5000F, 3200F, 5200F, 8200F and 9950F. These are all flatbed scanners with a lamp in the scanner lid for scanning film. These all use proprietary, undocumented chipsets and generally only work with VueScan on Windows using a plugin library installed with the drivers from Canon.
Starting in 2007, Canon released four CanoScan scanners based on the same Genesys Logic chipsets as their LiDE scanners. These were the CanoScan 4400F, CanoScan 8400F, CanoScan 8600F and CanoScan 5600F. VueScan supports all these CanoScan scanners on all platforms, without using any Canon plugin libraries.
Starting in 2009, Canon releaased three CanoScan scanners using the same proprietary chipsets as they used in their printer/scanner/copiers. These were the CanoScan 8800F, CanoScan 9000F and CanoScan 9000F Mark II. VueScan supports all these CanoScan scanners on all platforms, without using any Canon plugin libraries. The CanoScan 8800F is especially popular for VueScan users, since it was widely sold and is still a very good scanner.
Canon began releasing their Pixma printer/scanner/copiers in about 2003, and in the subsequent 18 years have released more than 200 models of printer/scanner/copiers, all of which use a similar command set to the CanoScan 8800F.
This driver is compatible with a wide range of application software. The bundled scanner driver complies with ISIS/TWAIN/WIA standards and now is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit Native and Twain applications.

Your Canon printer still works correctly, but the new Windows 8 or 10 computer does not recognize the machine. In addition, the provided CD does not offer drivers and software for the latest version of Windows. Fortunately, Canon offers to download the driver for free from printers and scanners. It also works to install the device on Windows 10, Linux and even Mac (iMac and Macbook).
