The term "axis" was first applied to the Italo-German relationship by the Italian prime minister Benito Mussolini in September 1923, when he wrote in the preface to Roberto Suster's La Germania Repubblicana that "there is no doubt that in this moment the axis of European history passes through Berlin" (non v'ha dubbio che in questo momento l'asse della storia europea passa per Berlino).[7] At the time, he was seeking an alliance with the Weimar Republic against Yugoslavia and France in the dispute over the Free State of Fiume.[8]
axis ydirection, where ydirection is ij,places the origin at the upper left corner of the axes. The y valuesincrease from top to bottom. The default for ydirection is xy,which places the origin at the lower left corner. The y valuesincrease from bottom to top.
[m,v,d]= axis('state') returns the current settings for the axis limit selection, the axes visibility, and the y-axis direction. This syntax will be removed in a future release. Use the XLimMode, YLimMode, ZLimMode, Visible, and YDir properties of the axes to get the values instead.
___ = axis(ax,___) usesthe axes or polar axes specified by ax insteadof the current axes. Specify ax as the first inputargument for any of the previous syntaxes. Use single quotes aroundinput arguments that are character vectors, such as axis(ax,'equal').
For partially automatic limits, use inf or -inf forthe limits you want the axes to choose automatically. For example, axis([-inf10 0 inf]) lets the axes choose the appropriate minimum x-axislimit and maximum y-axis limit. It uses the specifiedvalues for the maximum x-axis limit and minimum y-axislimit.

The .call to the axis functions give you a nice way to create all those line and text elements in one go, but there's nothing to stop you from then coming back to select individual pieces of what was created and give it further styling. Something like this:
The gut-brain axis plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis. Many intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence signaling along this axis, modulating the function of both the enteric and central nervous systems. More recently the role of the microbiome as an important factor in modulating gut-brain signaling has emerged and the concept of a microbiota-gut-brain axis has been established. In this review, we highlight the role of this axis in modulating enteric and central nervous system function and how this may impact disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and disorders of mood and affect. We examine the overlapping biological constructs that underpin these disorders with a special emphasis on the neurotransmitter serotonin, which plays a key role in both the gastrointestinal tract and in the brain. Overall, it is clear that although animal studies have shown much promise, more progress is necessary before these findings can be translated for diagnostic and therapeutic benefit in patient populations.
