Hello All!

I trust everyone's having an enjoyable end to their summers. I'm
looking forward to seeing you all at the beginning of the semester!

In the meantime, recent reports have suggested that the Obama
administration is at a turning point in its Sudan policy. Last week,
the administration held a high-level meeting to discuss Sudan policy
recommendations. Gen. Gration, President Obama's special envoy,
presented an exclusively incentive-based policy plan, which does not
hold the Sudanese government accountable for its past abuses and
ignores the grave humanitarian situation in Darfur. Everyone at the
meeting endorsed Gen. Gration's proposal, except for Susan Rice, the
U.S. ambassador to the U.N. The plan is now heading to President Obama
for his sign-off (read this piece from Foreign Policy for more
information about the meeting: http://bit.ly/aEkexV).

With escalating violence in Darfur and the threat of renewed conflict
with Northern and Southern Sudan, this is a critical moment for Sudan.
Gen. Gration's policy proposal will leave the U.S. government ill-
equipped to engage the conflict resolution and prevention processes in
Darfur and Southern Sudan, respectively.

STAND is organizing vigils across the country to advocate for
President Obama's leadership on Sudan policy. The largest vigil will
take place at the Vice President's residence tomorrow night, at 7:30
pm. Join fellow human rights activists on this national day of action,
and ring the alarm on Sudan.

What: A candlelight vigil calling for President Obama's leadership on
Sudan policy
When: Tuesday, August 17 at 7:30 pm
Where: Naval Observatory, 34th St and Massachusetts Avenue, NW (One
Observatory Circle):

See you all soon!

All the best,
