Hello All!

Welcome (back) to the Hilltop! I'm looking forward to an exciting year, especially as far as STAND is concerned. We have a number of exciting activities coming down the line: a variety of educational events, exciting advocacy opportunities on the Hill, and fundraising for refugee relief in Darfur and eastern Chad. We're looking forward to meeting all of you in the coming weeks. In the meantime, here are a couple of activities to get you started:

  • I. General Interest Meeting: Wednesday, September 8; ICC 118; 8:30 pm
  • II. Field Trip to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum: Saturday, September 11; Meet at the Front Gates; Time TBD
  • III: Second Annual SSTOP, THiNK, STAND Up for Human Rights! Panel Event: Monday, September 27; Copley Formal Lounge; 7:00 pm
  • IV: Working Group on Mineral Extraction and Violent Conflict in the DRC

I. General Interest Meeting: Wednesday, September 8, ICC 118, 8:30 pm

Come to our general interest meeting this Wednesday to learn more about STAND and our work on education, advocacy, and fundraising for genocide and mass atrocities prevention! There will be food, of course. We look forward to seeing you there!

II. Field Trip to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum: Saturday, September 11, Time TBD

STAND is facilitating a visit to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. We will tour the museum's core exhibition, followed by a post-exhibit debriefing session on the importance of remembrance to our current understanding of genocide and mass atrocities. Contact Carolyn Shanahan (cshan...@gmail.com) for more information about the visit.

III. SSTOP, THiNK, STAND Up for Human Rights! Panel Event: Monday, September 27, Copley Formal Lounge, 7:00 pm

Join us for our second annual SSTOP, THiNK, STAND Up for Human Rights! event, on women's international human rights and women's rights advocacy. SSTOP, THiNK, STAND, and a variety of other human rights organizations on the Georgetown campus are teaming up to educate the campus community about opportunities for human rights activism. We are joined by scholars and practitioners in the human rights field. Join us!

IV. Working Group on Mineral Extraction and Violent Conflict in the DRC

In partnership with members of the university administration and faculty, STAND is organizing a working group on mineral extraction and violent conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The working group will convene to determine opportunities for the Georgetown administration to positively impact the conflict resolution process in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as to provide greater nuance to the Georgetown campus discourse surrounding conflict in the DRC. If you're interested in helping out, or just learning more about mineral extraction, conflict resolution, or the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, please contact Daniel Solomon (daniel.s...@gmail.com) for more information.

That's all for now! We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

All the best,
Daniel Solomon, SFS '13
