Hello All!

I hope this email finds you enjoying the beginning of your week, and that each of you had a meaningful 9/11 commemoration experience yesterday. We have an exciting week, filled with a number of good events and opportunities to get involved.

In this email, you will find:

  • Applications for our annual STAND national conference delegation--Romeo Dallaire, Samantha Power, and David Pressman have been invited, and hundreds of student activists from across the country will be there.
  • John Prendergast and Robin Wright are giving their talk on conflict minerals and the Democratic Republic of the Congo this week.
  • A couple of interesting pieces on the ethics of the "responsibility to protect" doctrine.

STAND National Conference
October 22-24; Applications due 11:59 pm on Sunday, September 18.

  • This year, between October 22 and 24, STAND National is holding its annual advocacy and education conference, entitled “Generation without Genocide.” The national conference is a fantastic opportunity to interact with fellow anti-genocide activists, learn about genocide and mass atrocities prevention and conflicts in Sudan, Libya, Syria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and build your network of community organizers. We have received a limited quantity of funding for our conference delegation, and have attached delegation applications. They're short, but we just want to get an initial sense of your interest in participating. See the attachment below, and please submit your application to st...@georgetown.edu by 11:59 pm on Sunday, September 18.

John Prendergast and Robin Wright on Conflict Minerals in the DRC
Wednesday, September 14, 7:00 - 8:30 pm, ICC 7th Floor, Executive Conference Room

  • The Enough Project, Raise Hope for Congo, the Georgetown African Studies Program and Georgetown STAND present the Conflict-Free Campus Initiative, featuring actress and activist Robin Wright, Goma-based field researcher Fidel Bafilemba, and Enough Project co-founder John Prendergast. Robin Wright just returned from a trip to eastern Congo with the Raise Hope for Congo campaign, and will present her reflections from the ground. Fidel Bafilemba and John Prendergast will discuss the policy approaches to conflict resolution in the DRC, and discuss opportunities for student grassroots engagement. RSVP to the Georgetown African Studies Program at african...@georgetown.edu, and check out the Facebook event.

Non-Required Reading

  • The debate on Libya and the future of the "responsibility to protect" doctrine continues. Check out this great series on e-IR, on the ethics of R2P and prospects for the future of international civilian protection policy.

That's all for now. Let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or comments. We look forward to seeing you at Wednesday's event!

All the best,
Georgetown STAND
