Hello All!

I hope midterms are progressing smoothly. I just wanted to update you on a couple of initiatives coming down the line:

1. Congo Week
Monday, October 17 - October 21 at Georgetown University

Come out to annual Congo Week to learn about, discuss, and organize around all things Congolese. In partnership with the Georgetown African Society, Georgetown STAND is hosting a variety of events on Congolese politics, history, and culture:

  • Monday, October 17: DRC Teach-In, with Georgetown African Society members leading the teaching session. Learn more about Congolese history, the origins of the current conflict, and the DRC's vibrant culture.
  • Tuesday, October 18 at 8:00 pm in WGR 201A: Crisis in the Congo screening, sponsored by the Georgetown chapter of Invisible Children. Representatives from Invisible Children will discuss the film and explain what you can do to contribute to ending the conflict in the DRC. Refreshments with be provided.
  • Wednesday, October 19: We'll be hosting a screening of Viva Riva, the critically acclaimed noir film about crime, corruption, and poverty in the DRC. Here's a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8GGI1lwgkk. Check it out!
  • Also, Congolese music will be played on WGTB radio on Wednesday and Saturday of next week.

Be sure to check out our fliers around campus for more information!

2. Congo Working Group Opportunity
After a brief hiatus, we are reconvening the Georgetown University Working Group on Mineral Extraction and Violence in the DRC, under the leadership of Carly Rosenfield. If you're interested in getting more involved in human rights work related to the DRC, please email st...@georgetown.edu.

3. STAND's National Conference
October 22 - October 24, Washington, DC

STAND is holding its national conference in two weekends, and there's still space! If you're interested in attending, please contact st...@georgetown.edu. Also, STAND has set up an unConference track, which will allow you to craft your own agenda. Submit proposals here!

I look forward to hearing from all of you over the coming weeks. Talk to you soon!

All the best,
Daniel
