Dear Vice President Gray and Members of the Dining Service Review Committee,
As Fordham seeks bids for a new dining service contract, we, the undersigned, would like to speak on behalf of the approximately 225 workers whose situation is made vulnerable because of these negotiations. We are writing to ensure that the jobs, wages, health and pension and other benefits of our colleagues continue to be as good as what they currently enjoy.
As a Jesuit, Catholic university, one that often refers to itself as a family, Fordham has an obligation to all members of the campus community, particularly those who are most at risk to the repercussions of this decision’s outcome. Fordham should be guided by Catholic Social Teaching, which seeks to protect those most vulnerable. As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops makes clear “If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected” – a position that has been emphasized by Pope Francis. Without assurances that will protect our colleagues’ jobs, wages and benefits, hundreds of our community members will be put in a precarious situation, and Fordham will have failed in its commitment to the dignity of work and justice for all workers.
With the workers’ union, we encourage the committee to ensure that whoever wins the bid for our dining service will protect our colleagues by:
· Employing all the current workers and maintaining their current wages and seniority.
· Preserving all the terms of the labor contract including but not limited to the workers’ retirement and medical benefits.
· Committing to recognizing and maintaining a fair working relationship with Teamsters Local 810.
Many of these workers have served Fordham faithfully for many years. As the Fact Sheet prepared by the union makes clear, jobs, wages and benefits are an important component of the decision being made here regarding cafeteria and food service provisioning. Our employees’ interests and rights are in jeopardy without your commitment to their well-being. As a Catholic and Jesuit institution, we must do everything that we can to protect the dignity of work and the rights of all members of our community.
Sincerely,
