      ONE FAIR WAGE DC

ELECTION DAY SIGNATURE COLLECTION

Dear KI Friends,

Thank you for your continued support of restaurant workers and The Restaurant Opportunities Centers United over the last years. We are reaching out to our allies now during a crucial time in Washington, D.C. and across the nation.

The Restaurant Opportunities Center of Washington, D.C., through its  501(c)4 affiliate ROC Action, has filed a ballot initiative that will eliminate the sub-minimum wage for tipped workers in the District of Columbia and establish one fair, living wage for all workers. We need to collect almost 23,000 signatures in order to place One Fair Wage on the ballot for the next election.

ROC is asking KI allies to join our fight against gender and racial discrimination by helping us collect signatures at the polls on Election Day.   Please SIGN UP HERE for a shift and help us get to our goal in ONE day!

YES, I WANT TO SIGN UP TO HELP FIGHT AGAINST GENDER AND RACIAL DISCRIMINATION!

WHAT: One Fair Wage DC ballot initiative signature collection

WHEN: Early voting (Oct 28-Nov 4) and Election Day (Nov 8th)

WHERE: Polling locations throughout DC

COMPENSATION: $15/hr

For more information, please contact Jessica Yanez at 915-781-5695 or jes...@rocunited.org

If you are a DC resident, you can start collecting signatures at any time.

BACKGROUND

2016 has been a year of unprecedented growth for the One Fair Wage Campaign. Tipped workers, high-road employers, labor unions, women’s rights advocates, community leaders and progressive legislators are working to make One Fair Wage a reality at the municipal, state, and federal level.

In the District of Columbia, the City Council’s recent minimum wage increase to $15 by 2020 was great news for many workers, but it certainly was not for D.C.’s 29,000 tipped workers. Largely women and people of color, they face disproportionate rates of poverty, discrimination, and sexual harassment as a result of the sub minimum wage system. An increase from $2.77 to just $5 is a disrespectful drop in the bucket toward the equity and dignity they deserve for their hard and valuable work.

The Council vote was disappointing, but hardly surprising. Councilmembers have received thousands of dollars in contributions from the restaurant industry lobby. In return, rather than allowing D.C. voters to be heard on the issue, the Council made that decision—the wrong decision—for them.

With the filing of this ballot initiative, workers and their allies affirm that the people will be heard on this issue! Please join us!
