Maybe someone can advise me about the auto insurance requirements for my trip to Laredo?

I live permanently in Guanajuato and have Mexican temporary resident status and own a US registered Volvo that I drove here from Santa Monica. I have valid Mexican insurance, but no current US insurance. I have to make a trip to Laredo to visit the consulate there and will be driving across the border into Laredo, Texas, for around 3 days prior to my return to GTO. My California registered tags on the car are up to date. I do not intend to drive to the US again in 2015.

My question is, do I need to have US insurance on the car to cross the border and is it something I will be asked for? If I do need US insurance then can I buy it at the border for just my short trip or will I have to buy a longer period?

Thanks you.

Yep, Geoff, ya gotta have insurance to drive in Texas. It's easy and cheap to get online, just for 3 days. Probably $5.00 dollars per day. --doyle

and if you ever need to show insurance proof to re-register your CA vehicle
you can buy a month's policy cheap and that should suffice for registration.

I have Califrnia plates and asked DMV if I needed insurance.  it depends on the State you are driving through.  Ca doesn't care. What you do in Texas.  Texas is the one to ask, but I think you,re safe.
