This is one in a series of emails I'm forwarding to the new GTFS Flexible Transit Working Group. These emails make up the initial conversation that led to the creation of the working group. I'm sending them with permission of the original senders for archival purposes, allowing new participants to the conversation to get up to speed.

DRT

Apologies if this is nitpicky, but I'm not convinced about the name (and the frequent use of "demand responsive" throughout the text) but I'm willing to yield to those of you with more transport domain experience. The wikipedia article seems to imply DRT does not necessarily include some of the modes I hope we can also cover with this... I dunno... "gtfs-non-fixed-route"? that's sort of a mouthful and again may not be accurate. Suggestions?

Demand response is a fairly standardized industry term for those of us in the paratransit realm. It does imply a call -- demand -- to make a trip happen. Non-fixed route could inlcude taxis. It could include commuter bus services or van pool maybe. Seems overly broad to me.

An alternative term would be "Flexible Transport" or "Dynamic Transport." I haven't heard these used as a term (much), but the advantage is that it invokes a direct comparison against "Fixed route/stop/schedule transit"

I'm in agreement with Heather on this one. DRT is the most comprehensive term I can think of, without being overly broad or defined by what we're not.

I would be open to Flexible or Dynamic, esp if we're trying to sound jargony. Flexible is a good contrast to fixed. Dynamic sounds slightly more like it came from a marketing dept (not necessarily a bad thing).

Based on email conversation, it looks like the group is settling on "flexible" -- unless I hear any objections…
