This is one in a series of emails I'm forwarding to the new GTFS Flexible Transit Working Group. These emails make up the initial conversation that led to the creation of the working group. I'm sending them with permission of the original senders for archival purposes, allowing new participants to the conversation to get up to speed.

Also, note that Denis is proposing to use OpenTripPlanner for this, which makes perfect sense to me:

Nice timing!

We can discuss further in the call, but my inclination at this point would be to piggy-back on this effort.  This also gives us another consumer, in addition to Google.

I believe that's the Atlanta VTCLI project. Denis works for Cambridge Systematics.

All,

You should definitely reach out to Denis. I haven't worked with him directly but he was on the OneBusAway NYC team with my colleagues at OpenPlans and they spoke highly of his work. Regarding the data standards I haven't talked with Denis about this but it appears that he's already put quite a bit of time into this. Seems smart to have his perspective represented.

Also, FWIW, we (Conveyal) have been invited onto the Atlanta VTCLI project team by Cambridge to assist with routing related tasks. David Emory's been heading up that relationship on behalf of Conveyal as he's based in Atlanta and used to work at ARC.

Sean:

Maybe I don’t properly understand you point below about “piggy-back on this effort”. If I understand what they are thinking of doing in Atlanta, it is to develop an open source trip planner that can handle these other types of demand-responsive types of services, AFTER they (the services) are part of the GTFS spec.

The summary of prior proposals that Denis put together indicates—at least to me—that there is still a ways to go in terms of thinking all of that through from the spec perspective, and from my perspective that is the function of this present group, to think it through more systematically and to  provide input to Google so they can run with this just like they did on the original fixed route element. So while I see possible additions to this group from the Atlanta initiative—Denis as the obvious point of contact for this—the main opportunity for piggy backing would seem to be them as a consumer after there is a DR element to the spec.

I don’t know Denis or the other folks involved in the Atlanta initiative, but if someone else does and wants to reach out to him (or whoever) and invite him to participate in this group, that would be great. And invite him to the call tomorrow morning. Late notice I realize, but hopefully timely.

Roger,

I mean that if Denis’s proposal overlaps what we’re working on in terms of scope, it makes more sense to me to join the discussion on the same open forum thread as Denis, rather than proposing our own set of specs (either privately to Google or openly on the list).

He’s done some good work pulling together existing DRT proposals, including work that members of this group have been a part of (Aaron):

https://github.com/camsys/1click/wiki/State-of-paratransit,-DRT,-flexible-routes,-etc-for-GTFS

I think it’s easier to start with this and see where it does/doesn’t meet our needs that we outlined in the Google Doc and then propose changes/additions to this spec, rather than starting from scratch.

We can discuss more in phone call.

I just reached out to Denis via email and vm and invited him to join us. I'll let the group know what he says.
