My son will be going to 7th grade GTA. He is not very happy to go GTA
because he thinks he will be removed from his friends and peers. He
asks me many questions like "whether there will be sports team in GTA,
or will there be band, or will there be elective courses". I obviously
do not have the answers to many questions myself. He keeps on asking
me what does Barry Miller's GT Program will not offer that GTA will
offer.

Does any other parent experience similar questions or similar
resistance to go to GTA from their kids?

Yes, my son does it, too. I simply told him that he didn't know
better and assured
him that he'd be happy and would have many old as well as new friends
there. Kids
don't know what they don't know. Sometimes all their need is a little
encouragement.
Honestly, the more people object the GTA, the more we want to go
there.

You guys gave me an idea. I think we should hold a couple of mixers for the kids. We can all meet at Jakes Grill and other places. Once your kids get to know some of the kids socially, they will bs much more comfortable with the idea.
Sound good?

That is a great idea. I know that my son is trying to find out if he will know anyone there or will have to start over. This way he will have plenty of friends before the first day of school.

Cool!!
This is one of the things we can discuss at the meeting on Wednesday.
Also, Silverlake dad, I think one of your son's questions was about sports, right?
It was my understanding that the GTA kids would be participating in sports and other rec stuff with the rest of the population of the school.
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong!

I like the idea of the mixers. One idea to consider is doing seperate
mixers based on the school/grade level they will be. At the original
mixer most thought that my son would be in jr. high next year and he
will only be in the 6th grade. With so many kids together, it was
hard to figure out who would be going to school next year with my
son.

That's a great idea! With a smaller, grade-specific group they'll be able to meet the kids who will be in their classes, rather than having 3 out of 4 of the kids being from different grades.

I like the grade specific mixer idea. My son is very concerned that he's leaving behind the friends he's had since kindergarten; I'd like him to see there are new friends to be made!

I like the mixer idea for different grades. But I have concern. Lets
say there's 80 students enrolled for 7th grade GTA, but only 5
students come for the social mixer, that will be a detriment (at least
for my son) than being a positive thing. In my case, if my son does
not see adequate (say 20 - 40 kids) number of fellow students in the
mixer, he will think he is being "forced" to go to GTA where only few
kids are going. IMHO, we should have the mixer ONLY if a critical mass
is there. Thanks.

We live on the west side of Pearland.  There're many fun and free gathering opportunities for our kids and parents.
Check them out at http://www.pearlandparks.com/.  Tom Bass Regional Park is also a wonderful place for families.
We also have free access to pools, tennis court, and many playgrounds.  Many people are on vacations, kids in summer camps
or grandparents' homes, etc., so it may even be harder to get a large group of kids.  I suggest that we get them together as often as possible before the school's out in June.  How about the first gathering at Southdown Park for music, food and games?  I can make a sign of GTA or of that sort, so we can find each other there.  Bring your lawn chairs, picnic blankets, coolers, games, etc.  Don't forget your kids.

Let's see how many families we can get at this event.  And we can move on from there.  Let the group know if you plan on being there.
Look forward to meeting you all.
