Dear IBM Academic Initiative User,

It is our time to think about future of our planet! Accept the Call for Code 2021 Challenge, submit a project to combat climate change and compete for the grand prize of $200,000. Students participating in the University Challenge can use the tools and resources of the IBM Academic Initiative at no-charge.

The 2021 Call for Code University Challenge has brought together curious and innovative developers from different parts of the world to achieve the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals with open source-powered technology.

Last year’s Call for Code Global winner, Agrolly from Pace University, advances capabilities for small-scale farmers with technology innovation. Pandemap, the winner of the 2020 University Challenge, provides individual users with recommended routes of travel that avoid heavily trafficked areas. Learn more about last year’s University Challenge finalists. This year it can be you!

Accept the Global Challenge to get a chance to win $200,000 USD. In addition, students can join the University Challenge to compete for a $10,000 USD prize.

It is time to take your skills and expertise onto the next level by engaging into solving global climate change! This year we have divided the 2021 Challenge into three sub-themes:

  • Clean water and sanitation — From intelligent solutions for small farmers to recycling showers, technology can make a significant impact on the availability of water and its consumption.
  • Zero hunger —Technology can help farmers to grow more crops in areas on the edge of drought or organizations to quickly distribute perishables from small stores to local homeless shelters.
  • Responsible production and green consumption — Technology can help in many ways, from recommendations on energy efficiency to highlighting the carbon footprint of purchases we make.
Together with Call for Code Creator David Clark Cause, Charitable Partner United Nations Human Rights, and the Linux Foundation, IBM invites the world's software developers and innovators to combat climate change with modern technology.
