Caros,

- How much research in your region is CURRENTLY BEING CONDUCTED on the following topics?
  1. Rates and locations of mortality of wildlife after collision with vehicles

  2. Effects of roads or road upgrades on the livelihoods of local communities

  3. Barrier effects of roads and traffic on wildlife movement

  4. Other topics on the impacts of roads and traffic

  5. Other topics on the use and effectiveness of mitigation techniques

  6. Impacts of roads on water flow and hydrology issues

  7. Effects of pollution e.g. light, noise, chemical, from roads and traffic on wildlife

  8. Rates of use of wildlife crossing structures (e.g. culverts, landbridges etc) by wildlife

  9. Reviews of the adequacy of Environmental Impact Assessments in road planning process

  10. Population-level effectiveness of mitigation measures

  11. The role or importance of road-free places in conserving biodiversity

  12. Effectiveness of fencing at reducing mortality rates

  13. Systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses of existing data sets and published studies and reports

  14. Effects of roads on the loss of indigenous human cultures

  15. Cost-effectiveness of different mitigation options

  16. Population-level effects of roads and traffic on wildlife (including fish)

- How important is it to do more research over the next 10 years on the following topics?

  1. Rates and locations of mortality of wildlife after collision with vehicles

  2. Rates of use of wildlife crossing structures (e.g. culverts, landbridges etc) by wildlife

  3. Effectiveness of fencing at reducing mortality rates

  4. Population-level effectiveness of mitigation measures

  5. Population-level effects of roads and traffic on wildlife (including fish)

  6. Impacts of roads on water flow and hydrology issues

  7. Effects of roads on the loss of indigenous cultures

  8. Cost-effectiveness of different mitigation options

  9. The role or importance of road-free places in conserving biodiversity

  10. Effects of roads or road upgrades on the livelihoods of local communities

  11. Reviews of the adequacy of Environmental Impact Assessments in road planning process

  12. Systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses of existing data sets and published studies and reports

  13. Other topics on the impacts of roads and traffic

  14. Other topics on the use and effectiveness of mitigation techniques

- When thinking about future road ecology research, how important is the following to you?

  1. Researchers and government road agencies work together collaboratively to initiate and develop road ecology research projects

  2. Research span multiple sites and produce results that are transferable or generalisable to other species and regions

  3. Priority be given to the specific needs identified by government road agencies

  4. Research be conducted with extensive collaboration across projects, states and countries

  5. Road agencies / Departments of transport make greater use of existing knowledge acquired during previous research projects

  6. Research be strategically planned and co-ordinated by a high-level group which includes representatives from government, industry and research

  7. Research be managed by road agencies and awarded as consultancy projects where researchers competitively tender for the work

  8. More funding for research be made available

  9. Research always uses scientifically robust experiments, with data collected before and after manipulations, and at control and impact sites, with adequate replication.

  10. Research be initiated and conducted by individuals or teams on an as-needs or as-opportunity arises situation

  11. Research be conducted, funded and directed in much the same way as it is now

  12. Research programs are adaptive and responsive to new information and emerging issues

  13. Government road agencies/Departments of Transport increase their level of support and appreciation towards research

Dear Colleagues,

Road ecology is the interaction between roads, traffic and ecology. Research on the impacts of roads and the use and effectiveness of mitigation measures is used to inform the design, location and management of roads.

A questionnaire (follow this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/B7YY656) has been designed to inform an important discussion about the future direction of road ecology research.  This discussion will take place at a workshop at the International Conference on Ecology and Transportation (ICOET) to be held in Arizona in late June 2013.

If you are involved in any aspect of road ecology (ranging from planning, design, construction, management, research, advocacy, etc) then you are invited to complete the survey.

The survey is being conducted now, and is open to everyone around the world, to ensure that the input into the discussion at ICOET reflects the global perspective, not just from those attending ICOET.  The survey is voluntary, anonymous and should take no more than 15 minutes to complete.

The direction of road ecology research is currently being debated by road agencies around the globe.  Please participate in this survey and forward this invitation to friends and colleagues to ensure all opinions can be heard.

Many thanks!

Regards,

Rodney van der Ree (Australia), Paul Wagner (USA) and Lars Nilsson (Sweden)
