So should we take some of these schools off our list of applications bc they are too good relative to other schools throughout the world?

Jon Rork's advice was: knock off the top 10 or 20 departments, and let
your committee edit your list after that. But top 10-20 according to
what? These lists and the US News lists are not the lists of top econ
research departments. I've been triangulating using rankings from
IDEAS and the Kalaitzidakis et al. 2003 paper. But these are lagging
indicators and quite incomplete.

Clearly Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, U of Chicago, MIT, U Michigan,
and CalTech are out. Tilburg probably, too. Wisconsin, Duke, Brown,
Boston U, Dartmouth, Tilburg, U Rochester, and U MD College
Park--these are not really going to happen for us. But my committee
is saying, there's no harm in sending it in because the cost is so
low. It's almost certainly a waste, but it's a small waste so it's
not worth worrying about.

This is sort of my strategy, at least.
