GSoC Sri Lanka meetup 2012 (was: Sri Lanka becomes the 6th in the list of GSoC students for the year!)

Hi folks,

Thats a great Idea Kasun Ayya! Big favor! if we can organize a GSoC meet-up for Accepted students of 2012.

Great to see the interest. I believe it's much worth to have a meetup to get to know each other. Nothing is still decided yet, and we need to start a discussion with others who contributed to gsoc-srilanka. I had a quick chat with Pradeeban, and he is already on-board! :-)

If this is to happen, as a start, we need to discuss on what, where, and when we are going to do this. Seems there's a lot of interest from the students at Pera, and SLIIT. Shout out where you like to have the session that is more convenient for all of you?

What kind of things do you like to have in the meetup? I don't think having technical talks would be appropriate here since the audience will be from different backgrounds. May be we should focus on having events that help to familiarize with each other, and how to contribute for the betterment of GSoC and Open-Source in Sri Lanka, and ...?

I know that exams at Moratuwa finishes around May 12th. Does others have exams during the summer of code period?

Usually it was 9th. This year, we saw a truly island-wide performance,
with 4 students from the University of Peradeniya, which is a pleasant
sign. More impressive is the open source spirit and interest shown by
the students (More quality than quantity).

 

Fascinating. Glad to see other universities joining in. I have to say that this years gsoc sessions were much successful rather than last years. I remember last year, we hanged on in IRC, but almost nobody came there! ;)

May be we should organize a meetup for GSoC students if time permits? We did have something similar in GSoC 2010. 

But we have only counted 34 people via the Google doc. We still have eight left!

Students, keep contributing beyond the time frame of the Google Summer
of Code, and keep contributing to the FOSS regardless of the GSoC
results, as time permits.

Hi Kasun Ayya,

Sounds really cool ayya, yes our final exams are over now. They were just finished last week.
This month is little bit tricky for all university students I guess, Because all are having final exams this month.
May be we could have it on next month hopefully.
