Dear all,

the new year just started and I already received a request regarding projects for GSoC 2021!

Are we (=Erlang Ecosystem Foundation) planning to apply this year again as GSoC Organization?
According to the timeline, we would need to submit our application in the first two weeks of February (Jan 29 - Feb 19).
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com

There are a few changes in contrast to last year (https://opensource.googleblog.com/2020/10/google-summer-of-code-2021-is-bringing.html):

"• With the pandemic straining folks’ time we are changing the size of the projects and time commitment students are expected to spend on their projects. Starting in 2021, students will be focused on a 175-hour project over a 10-week coding period.”

There was already a longer discussion on the mentor mailing list end of last year that reducing the student commitment to 175 hr total is problematic since the mentor workload is only marginally affected by this.
Overhead for project management, selection, reporting etc. will be similar.

So, what should we do?
The riak_core_team would be up for mentoring 1-2 students again this year.

Best regards,
Annette

Hi all,

As I confirmed to Annette yesterday, I am happy to confirm the Erlang Ecosystem Foundation will apply to the GSOC again this year.. I will take care care of the registration once it open.

In the mean time I suggest we reuse the Github [1] to organise ourself and propose the projects. Please open a ticket to suggest a project and let's discuss about these projects or any requirements there.

Looking forward to hearing from you all :)

Best,

Benoît

Hello everyone,

I wanted to let you know that this year Klarna will be applying with a proposal under the Erlang Ecosystem Foundation. We will be providing more information about said project idea in a issue in the Github repository Benoît linked.

Best regards,
Pablo Costas Sánchez
