Hello fellow GSoC people in Switzerland,

Continuing on from the meeting summary at https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/gsoc-ch/nwesIecf2DI, I'd like to ask a question we asked ourselves, in hope of making the talk more generally applicable to our audience: university students.

What were the main reasons for your application and participation in GSoC?

For me, a large deciding factor was the fact that there exists a generous stipend, and that the work I do is my own, and I can work in very flexible conditions.

Other reasons include the fact that GSoC work is well acknowledged, also serving as a proof of skills. GSoC is also a good learning experience in general.

It was also mentioned that one can be put in touch with a vast community of FLOSS developers, which can lead on to exciting results such as wide recognition, conferences, job offers, and important contacts.

There have been many good points so far, but I'd like to ask you what your reasons were. Your responses will be much appreciated, as it'll help with the preparation of the talk.

Thank you and best regards,

Seon-Wook Park / Wookie

Hi Seon,

thanks for putting this up!

Regarding my top tree reasons:

* freedom and flexibility
* interacting with a open source community
* getting some code out in github (maybe interesting for potential employers...)

Hi Seon,

My reasons as a student:

It was my first significant contribution to a foss project.
It looks good on a cv.
I learned a lot out of the whole experience both technical facts and how to work better with others.
For the country I lived at the time the money was very good.

Reasons as a mentor:
I got to work with someone as a mentor.
Significant code improvements for the project.
Interacting with people who are interested in the project and have sometimes fresh and very cool ideas.
Recognition - getting in touch with the community.
(Chance to go to mountain view for the mentor summit)

Cheers,
Spyros

- It looks good on a CV, and interesting for potential employers.
- I learned a lot working with people of different backgrounds (culturally, and technically)
- And also because for the country where I live at the time, the money is good too.

Heya,

My reason to apply as a student was that, compared to other summer jobs, GSoC:

- Allowed me to work on awesome projects, with interesting people;
- Pays relatively well;
- Looks really good on your CV.

Peace,
Jasper
