Second Call for Bike Marshals!

Hello Everyone!

We are still in need of a few more volunteers to Bike Marshal at the Flying Pirate on Sunday May 4 (especially folks with mountain/cyclocross bikes who can escort the lead runners).   So far I have the following folks on my list:

Nemo Brauch:  Cyclocross bike

Chuck Voigt:  Cyclorcoss bike

Terry Donoghue:  Cyclocross bike

Bob Davis:  Road bike

Jim Ebert:  Road bike

Please let me know if you are interested!  We will meet at 6:45 at the race start line and roll out together, then breaking off to patrol the route again in designated "zones"  until the whole course is cleared.    As you know, this half marathon follows the first half of the fall marathon course with approx 1/4 of the race going through Nags Head Woods (so we need a few volunteers who are competent riding the trails).

Also, as usual the OBX blue jersey will be worn to identify us as official course marshals.  If you need to borrow a jersey please let me know what size and I'm sure we can find one for you.

Hey Nemo. I think I can help on road bike. But no such luck w cyclocross. I would fear for the runners safety w me on one of those.

Yes- I would recommend you practice it!  Especially the turn from the Old Nags Head Woods road onto the trail- that is steep and a bit awkward.  There will be a gate there when you practice, but it will be removed on race day.  On race day we will not go all the way up to the finish at the Y (the racers will, but we will not).  Instead, we will turn left at the trail fork and exit via the park on Barnes Street.

Thanks, Nemo.  Last time at that turn, I had unclipped to talk to the Stack em High folks and had a hard time getting clipped in and getting up the slope, so I got out of the runners' way.

I might add that last year in this section of the run I hung out off my bike as a set of eyes.  Runners coming through were hot, exhausted and with pollen and humidity, many were uncomfortable.  It is here where I encounter my medical emergency.  It might be prudent for a bike marshal to hang out somewhere half wayish between the entrance to the trail and the one volunteer who is usually at the top of the last hill before runners turn right to the final leg to the Y.

Andy, you may want to communicate with the safety officer in charge. Things may be a little different now that Charlie's gone. Cell phone coverage is so so on the trail. So you may need to figure out if something goes wrong how to get help. The two people that pasted away at the RNR never made it to the finish-line from what I heard. So the trail area would be my concern in regards to this new trend. You know the drill....plan for the worst.

I'll be meeting with the RD, Course Marshal team leads, and the new Safety Officer before race day to get briefed on their plans and will be communicating that out to all our Bike Marshals before race day.  So stay tuned.
