To Whom It May Concern,

I tried to download the Hallmark v2026.1 gmt files, but they seem to be binary files that I cannot process as regular. I also found the json file there is also binary.

Can anyone help fix it? Thanks!

Sincerely,
Yiming

Hi,

These files all come through as plain-text when I download them.  Are you downloading from our website or from somewhere else?

I have noticed that some web browsers have started temporarily blocking the download, prompting first to check if I really want to download the file.  However, if I click through that prompt they still download.  This happens for Chrome at least, and possibly other browsers, though Firefox doesn't seem to care.  Or it could be due to the operating system (Mac vs. Windows vs. Linux).

Also with Chrome, I find that the JSON extension is changed to TXT even though the file still downloads correctly.

It's quite possible that a firewall somewhere is aggressively treating all GMT & JSON files as if they are some other, more dangerous file format based on the extension and blocking your download for safety.  My only suggestion is that you could instead try downloading our full ZIP bundle of all GMTs from our Downloads page.

If you don't mind, could you send one of these binary files to our gsea...@broadinstitute.org mail address?  It would be interesting to see if we can learn anything about the issue from the file itself.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

Thank you for your quick response. I did use Chrome on macOS. I've attached the 3 Hallmark files which seem binary or incomplete. I also tried C1 files, and they look fine.

Sincerely,
Yiming

Thanks Yiming.  Yes, I can see the issues with these files, though I still can't explain what's happening.  It's also very odd that the C1 files are fine for you while these have issues.

Were you able to successfully obtain usable versions of these files by other means, like through downloading one of the ZIP bundles from my earlier link?  Since you are on a Mac, did you try with Safari?
