Hi Dear,

I’m Kanae from PHC Corporation, Japan.

I could not install “GSEA v4.4.0 for Windows”, either with Java or without Java.

According to IT service of my company, GSEA software is insufficient for our security policy.

Could you please handle our requests below.

  • Causes of blocking install (our IT teams said)

The file download has been blocked because the file is currently being distributed from a location that is not recognized as a “trusted domain” by our security system. Furthermore, the file does not have a trusted digital signature and does not meet the “trustworthiness criteria” required for execution. This measure is intended to prevent risks from unconfirmed or potentially harmful software.

  • Requests (our IT teams said)

1.        Digitally sign the file.

Sign with a certificate from a trusted certification authority to guarantee authenticity and integrity.

2.        Host on a trusted domain.

Re-upload to a proven secure domain (e.g., HTTPS, owner-verified).

3.        Submit to Microsoft for evaluation.

Use Microsoft's file submission portal and ensure that security tools such as Defender recognize it as “safe.”

Best Regards,

Hi Kanae,

Thank you for your message.  I am sorry for the delayed response.

We will try to fix this in a later release, but we have no estimate of when that can be.

In the meantime, here are a few different workarounds we can suggest.  Perhaps one of them is suitable for you.
  1. You can use version 4.3.2 of the software which has a signed certificate.  There are only minor differences between versions 4.3.2 and 4.4.0, and the algorithm used is unchanged.  You can download version 4.3.2 from here:
    https://data.broadinstitute.org/gsea-msigdb/gsea/software/desktop/4.3/GSEA_Win_4.3.2-installer.exe.
  2. Download version 4.4.0 directly from the following URL on the official website of the Broad Institute of MIT.  Perhaps your IT department will consider that a trusted domain:
    https://data.broadinstitute.org/gsea-msigdb/gsea/software/desktop/4.4/
  3. Run GSEA 4.4.0 on a Mac system.  The Mac versions on our Download page are all digitally signed by us and notarized by Apple.  These are also available at the same URL:
    https://data.broadinstitute.org/gsea-msigdb/gsea/software/desktop/4.4/
  4. Use GSEA from the online GenePattern resource at https://genepattern.org.  GenePattern is also maintained by our group and provides access to the same GSEA software, but from a web interface so there is no installation required.
If you use GenePattern, the data files are uploaded to the GenePattern server. They are kept in a private area and you can remove them at any time, but the GenePattern server is not approved for PHI (Protected Health Information) data and not appropriate for other highly sensitive data.
Regards,
David
