c. Bringing personal prescription medications into Vietnam

You can find the official guidance here: https://vietnamembassy.org.au/en/bring-medication-viet-nam

In summary:

Personal use is allowed

You may bring prescription medicines for your own treatment without an import licence, as long as the quantity is reasonable for personal use.

Strict limits for controlled medicines

For narcotic (addictive) medicines, you should not exceed 7 days’ supply, and for psychotropic medicines or medicines containing precursors, you should not exceed 10 days’ supply, according to your doctor’s prescription. These medicines should be declared to customs on arrival.

Other (non-controlled) medicines

For normal prescription medicines (e.g. for blood pressure, diabetes, stomach issues, allergies, etc.), personal quantities are generally acceptable. As a guideline, the total customs value should not exceed about USD 200 per person per trip.

Packaging and prescription

Please keep your medicines in their original packaging, with a clear label (drug name, active ingredient, strength, expiry date), and bring a doctor’s prescription or letter in English stating: Your name, Name of the medicine and dosage, How long you will be taking it, The doctor’s name, signature, and clinic/hospital address

If you need more than 7–10 days of controlled medicines: Bring a detailed prescription and be prepared to explain this to customs.

d. Currency in Vietnam

The currency in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). You can bring USD cash and exchange it for VND at banks or licensed exchange counters in Vietnam. I can help to exchange.

If you bring more than $5,000 in cash per person, you must declare this amount to customs on arrival. To avoid this, please keep the cash you bring under $5,000.

Best regards,

Anh

Hi TA-

Kien-
Robin and I have a few questions, some relating to applying for our Visa as well as some other items:
-The Visa asks for our temporary address in Vietnam. How should we answer that question?
-Our flight lands in Ho Chi Minh on 01 February and we are scheduled to leave Hanoi on 17 February (see flights below). For the Visa application should we indicate some extra days before and after the actual flights to allow some cushion (especially after the departure date)?
-For the Visa, should we provide a contact telephone number in Vietnam? What number should we provide?

Please provide the names and addresses of all the hotels in which we'll be staying (including dates). We need a booking at the hotel in Ho Chi Minh City on the night of 01 Feb. as we're arriving that afternoon. It should be in the same room that we would be occupying on the night of 02 Feb.

-What requirements do we need to meet (if any) in order to bring personal prescription medications into Vietnam?
-What do you recommend in terms of currency that we should use in Vietnam? Is it easily obtainable in US banks?

As promised, here are the flights that we've booked:
31 Jan 2026
Cathay Pacific 841
Lv NYC (JFK) 9am
Arr Hong Kong 2.10pm (01 Feb 2026)
Cathay Pacific 799 (01 Feb 2026)
Lv Hong Kong 4.45pm
Arr Ho Chi Minh 6.35pm

17 Feb 2026

Lv Hanoi 11.05am
Arr Hong Kong 2.10pm

Many thanks for everything - Alan
