Speakers:  Carrie Hane Dennison and Beth Bacon

  • Carrie Hane Dennison has been creating websites with a content-first perspective for nearly 15 years. Starting out as a one-woman team who had to code, design, develop, and edit a website, she is now glad to work with talented developers and designers to support the content and IA concepts she creates. Now she focuses on creating holistic content strategies for all types of clients, most recently as content & usability director at Balance Interactive, a full-service digital agency. Her pursuit of an international affairs degree brought her to Washington, DC, but the dawn of the World Wide Web created a new environment for her to put her analytical and strategic-thinking skills to use. Her varied experiences help her better understand what people want from websites and plan the content accordingly.

  • Beth Bacon is a user advocate and considers content a key factor in the usability of a website. In both information architecture and content strategy roles, she creates structures for websites so users can find the information they are looking for, and plans and writes content that users can understand and act on. Beth also has an interest in training; she sees the value in helping others to write clearly and use technology with ease.  With more than a decade of experience, Beth has created content and strategy for a variety of audiences and in a variety of contexts: nonprofit organizations, K-12 education issues, state policy issues, union communications, marketing communications, and grant proposals. All these experiences strengthen her abilities as a user advocate.

Beth received her BA in Philosophy at Colorado College and MA in Professional Writing at Carnegie Mellon University.

When she’s not thinking about web users and content, Beth enjoys her children’s curiosity about the world, hiking, camping, travel, swimming, and throwing pots on the wheel.
