Also, for those intrigued, this is a link to a little website I put together a few years ago about another aspect of Alexandria's Civil War history.
A group of hospitalized African American soldiers successfully petitioned for their comrades to be buried in the Military Cemetery, with proper headstones and identification as soldiers fighting for the country, rather than in unmarked graves in a civilian cemetery. The petition was discovered at the National Archives a few years ago.
