Amazon S3 assures "99.999999999% durability of objects over a given year." What's the durability of Google Cloud Storage? Do you guarantee against data loss?

Hi,

We don't believe that quoting a number without hard data to back it up is meaningful to our customers, and unfortunately, at this point, we can't share the kind of architectural information necessary to back up a durability number.

However, we have designed our service around the express goal of offering best-in-class service quality. This includes durability and recovery mechanisms (as well as availability and performance). Our service is designed with a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) of zero. This article summarizes the data recovery policies employed by our enterprise data services, which are very similar to the policies in place for our Cloud Storage service.

Hope that helps,

Marc

1. The article states that user uploaded data is replicated in real-time across two distinct disaster threat zones. So, since you said Google Cloud Storage service employs very similar policies, does it mean... if I create a bucket in US and start uploading content to it, all the data is replicated across two data centers in two distinct threat zones in US? can you confirm that please?

2. Maybe you can also assure us that our data is as safe here as it is with Amazon S3?

Thanks.

1. Google Cloud Storage data is replicated across at least two distinct threat zones. However, we reserve the right to introduce additional storage offerings that may have different characteristics in the future, based on customer demand.

2. We believe our service offers a unique combination of reliability, durability, performance and value. Unfortunately, we can't comment on other storage products or their claimed durability.

Enterprise customers are used to seeing Service Level Agreements. I
know Google only has engineers working for them, but it doesn't make
good business sense to ignore this.

Kieran,

FYI - we do have a service level agreement (https://developers.google.com/storage/docs/sla). Please see earlier in the thread for an explanation about why we don't publish a durability number. Our RPO is, as mentioned earlier, zero - and I can assure you that we take that objective very seriously.

Thanks,
Navneet
