I tried to run diagnostics on a ’98 R1100GS today but discovered that the diagnostic plug is somewhat different.  I then also noticed that the R1100GS does not even feature on the list of bikes within the software.

Is it not possible to run diagnostics on this bike or am I missing something?

Dear friend

as far as i know you can buy a cable made specially for this bike that has only three pins  yet the simplicity in this bikes electronics is such that you can diagnose most of them all on your own , if you wish i can send you sites that you can visit to know and be able to service , balance your engine idling perfectly with minimal tools

hi Guy,

have a look at the related FAQ:
 http://www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/support/faq/will-the-r1100-series-ever-be-supported

If your R1100GS does not feature one the software, then you're not using the latest Beta... Pls download the GS-911 downloader and get the latest version.

best,
Stephan

Thanks Mike

It is actually a clients bike that he drowned doing a rather deep water crossing.  Bike ran for about 30 metres afterward and then died.  He was about 350km from home and I happened to be in the area and tried to assist, having my GS-911 on me at the time.  The bike is currently in my workshop, having got water in the cylinders and oil.  Have drained and replaced the oil and filters and will be firing it up again tomorrow to see what’s what.  Hopefully (for him) not the Hall sensor.

I will be ordering the 3-pin adapter in the morning.

The links to the sites you mentioned will be much appreciated.

Regards

Guy

Hi  Guy

Please check and replace the oil in the gear box as i have seeing the same scenario that the water find its way in to it please replace the oil and i am sure you will find water in there i think and if i remember well from the breather hall sensor you can get a second hand one but is not often that goes faulty allow me to say so  .oh also the petrol filter it might be faulty too ,as well as the side shaft for any water also from the breather pipe

I have seem to have deleted most of the 1100 GS sites as i have got now R1200 GS i had a lot more sites to have helped you i am sorry

with a spark plug conected to the one h/t cable check if you have spark then if you take out one of the injectors look if you have petrol coming in spray form that will give you an good idea where your problem is

if you haven't got a spark please check the hall  sensor

Hi There,
I have a single spark 1150GS where the GS911 indicates a faulty no 1 Hall sensor. Has anybody had any success with wire problems between sensors & ECU.
Alt is a Hall sensor inactive usyally terminal.
Strangely when testing for spark, both plugs spark, if a bit of a weak spark. I would have expected one plug not to spark with a faulty Hall sensor!
The bike's symptom is that it will not start. I would also have imagined that it would start on the healthy plug/sensor.
Thanks for any advice, Kelly

Had the same problem. One other point was on cranking, I would get back firing through the intake or exhaust occassionally. Wires bunch up in the harness behind the alternator, and the insulation has been known to degrade giving a false signal to the ECU. Sounds like you need to replace the Hall sensor pickup. A plug for MotoElectrik...cheaper than BMW.
