I have error code 10442 which states that there is a fuse out that controls the fan and oxygen sensor. When I do the 'run fan test' the fan does not come on. According to the manual there are no fuses -- these functions are electronically controlled. Can anyone tell me what I should do next

thanks

Check fan for failure.  If shorted the canbus will shut it off and appear as a blown fuse.

Just out of curiosity, what model/year bike do you have?

I don't have this one listed on my Fault Code listing, however, I do have the 10443 error: Fuse Activated for Electric Fuel-Pump. For this message, the error code was generated by an excessive current draw from the fuel pump and the correction was a fuel pump replacement.

For your error, I would check out the fan and/or sensor. Is this the same sensor that is disconnected when removing the fairing. For my R1200RT I get a disconnect error when removing the fairing since I disconnect the air sensor at the right front air intake to filter. It sounds like you may have a bad fan.

I have included a copy of the fault code listing that I have compiled so far. Let me know what you find out.

Cheers,

Hi Mark

error 10442 -- this error code appeared on my 2009 F800GS. The word explanation said fuse for oxygen sensor, fan and tank vent valve. None of the sensors are connected to the faring -- everything is pretty much out in the open. To-day I had the bike out and the error disappeared -- has happened 3 times in the past. The fan will not urn on when I try the fan test but I hear a chirp so I think It is the fan -- will have to take it to a dealer for confirmation. Fortunately (i hope) I bought extended warranty last year and I hope it works

Thanks for the follow-up Wayne. Sure sounds like the fan has gone south. Please post a follow-up when you return from the dealer, I'll be interested in knowing what they do...

With engine off of course stick your hand in and see if you can turn the fan blades easily by hand.
I got a small pebble wedged between a blade and the shroud that caused this problem for me a while back...

Don't know if this is a fix or not.
My f800gs the fan will stick from time to time and not com on. Don't know if it is sand or water that gets in there, but when I reach in and turn it by hand, it once again turns free and operates normally.

Wayne make sure fan can rotate. I had a similar problem with my wife's bike
after coming off the Dempster and Denali highways . The fan was plugged
solid with mud and stuff. Cleaned it out and all was well.

As a side note just did a complete fluid change R1200 GS . Just great to
check before and after brake fluid pressures. Bleed function worked
excellent.

Thanks Stefan and dam the Chinese knock offs

Hi All

Thanks for all the good advice. When I looked the fan was 'stuck'. I freed it up and it's working -- a little noisy but working. I think a little more cleaning is in order and all will be well. If not then the blades are rubbing on the shroud and there's always a new fan if necessary. I would not have known except for the GS911, the fault list, and the output tests.

thanks again

just for sake of completeness... "According to the manual there are no
fuses"... this is true indeed, and the control module protects the
output when it determines an over-current situation.. and when it shuts
off the output to a particular section, BMW refers to this as "fuse
activated" ...probably to keep with the historic idea of fuses...

best,
Stephan
