On several occasions lately, when connecting the GS911 for analysis, I have received the message to turn ignition on as the GS911 does not recognize that it is on.  This has happened on three older bikes.  Most recently, on a 1999 R1200C and a 2002 R1150GSA.  Of course I double checked to see that the ignition was indeed on, that the run switch was in the “on” position and that the bike was in neutral.  After checking all of that and re-initiating the startup procedure, the GS911 still didn’t recognize that the ignition is on.  When I moved the GS911 to my 20008 GSA everything worked fine.

I wonder if anyone else has seen this issue and has any explanations.  I’ll also check the web site.

Thanks,

Joel Watson

what are you looking at to determine that the GS-911 is not recognizing your Ignition ON state?

the 1150 and 1200C have the same engine controller family.. and NO ignition pin in the Diagnostic connector... hence
there is NO way for the GS-911 to tell whether you have the ignition ON... only on the KMSK and BMSK families is there an ignition pin...

Stephen,

The GS 911 is connected to my PC via USB connection.  When I chose the 1200C analysis from the menu I get the message on the screen to Turn the Ignition on even though it is on.   When I click OK,  I get a second message on the screen that says the GS911 does not recognize the ignition on and asks if I want to continue anyway.   Maybe this is normal??

Thanks for your feedback.

Joel

what are you trying to do?

pls  provide more information and/or screenshots...

it could be normal, but it could also point to a non-communication issue with your controller... then it will pop up a message and tell you to look at all the issue like side stand, neutral, etc...  remember.. the older (pre-CAN) bikes route the ignition (power for the ECU), throgh the Neutral and side stand etc...

best,
Stephan

I wrote about this a while back and the situation occurred again today on a 1999 R1200C.  After hooking up the GS 911, turning the ignition on in neutral with kill switch in RUN position, I got the following:

Error:

Detected following problem:

Failed to read controller information.  No response from controller.  Check:

          Ignition On

          Kill Switch in RUN position

          Neutral selected

          Imobilizer (if equipped) deactivated

Do you wish to continue anyway.  If so, limited ABS functionality available.

I went ahead and continued and got fault code readings.  However, when I tried to do the Hall Sensor Test, I got the message that “GS911 unit not detected”

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi,
Have you forgotten to turn the black collar on the tip of gs 911 after inserting it, right?

No… the collar is turned and locked in place with the green light on.  I have used my GS911 on dozens of BMW’s and have only had this message a few times on older model bikes.

Thanks,

Joel

Hi,
Then it might be the oxide on the connectors, this is found on many old bike ... tried to spray a little something before inserting gs911?

hi Joel,

I don't see a support ticket on this, so I'll answer here...

I guessing this bike has no ABS right?  after starting to communicate with the bike, we talk to both engine controller and ABS... on the ABS side, this is to determine what version of ABS it has, so we can show the advanced Service functions for that particular ABS...  If it cannot determine the ABS, then the ABS functionality (yes, only relevant to the ABS), will be limited to reading and clearing of Fault codes, as well as ECU information...

Naturally if there is no ABS, then there is no limit and there is nothing to worry about... ;-)

best,
Stephan

I had a similar issue on a R1150RT.  I eventually discovered it didn’t like the fact that the bike was standing on the side stand.  Once I put it on the centre stand and folded the side stand away everything worked perfectly.

Guy

on the older bikes (non-CAN), the bike has to be in Neutral when the Sidestand is out... else the circuit cuts the power to the ECU (which is why it dies when you extend the side stand while in gear)... which of course is ALSO the reason for it NOTbeing able to talk to the ECU... as the power is cut to the ECU...

hence the instructions of:

Check:
          Ignition On
          Kill Switch in RUN position
       Neutral selected
          Imobilizer (if equipped) deactivated

best
Stephan

This bike only has a sidestand, but I have it on a lift with the kickstand up and in neutral.  ????  Can’t figure this out.

Stephan,

Maybe I need to look on the site to see how to file a ticket.  This bike does have ABS.  It is secured on a lift with the side stand up and in neutral, ignition on, and Kill switch in run position.  I have cleaned the contacts GS011 interface on the bike.  Maybe this is an issue with my GS911?  Suggestions for next step?

Thanks,

Joel

hi Joel,

best to submit a ticket to the HelpDesk, then we can take it from there...

Joel ,
First select your model (with ignition off ) , sign - Please switch on the ignition - turn on the ignition wait a few seconds ( 10-15 ) and then turn on the key . Also check your USB cable .

Try turning kill switch on rt. handle on and off. Listen for fuel pump. Then try running thru the gears and back to neutral if still no communication remove feul tank and clean ABS connections. To do that follow the wires up to unit, you will find a slidding window with a button towards the top, depress and slide upward. Good luck
