I just found this JST, single action crimp tool available via eBay from a UK based supplier. It appears to be the right size/type for the JST connectors we use.

Unfortunately, eBay will not let me make a purchase, due to some nonsense about shipping information and provides no method to get around it. (The usual eBay rubbish -- the worlds most hated, pile of junk, useless auction site every conceived, in my opinion. Hate it, with a vengeance. If you disagree, then you don't know what your missing! :P </rant>)

I've contacted the seller to see if we can arrange something. (Since I had to use the eBay contact form, I'll likely never get a response.)

MEANWHILE ... PLEASE ... if anyone knows of a similar tool -- note to crimp size and, "single action for both sheath and conductor crimp" -- at a similar or lower price and NOT ON USELESS @#$!! EBAY -- then please let me know. Thanks.

For those who haven't been down this track yet, the genuine JST branded tools are over USD$1,000 each. UNBELIEVABLY RIDICULOUS. WTF is wrong with the world? *sigh*

Grr. #@$!@#! aaaarrrggg.

There. I feel better. Sorry for the noise! :P

I thought it was a typo when I saw the JST crimper price. Either I am out of my mind, or they are.   I finally got desperate and tried my "servo" crimper that I purchased from Servocity.com ($20 US).  They worked great.  Unfortunately, they are currently out of stock.
I will do a search and let you know what I discover.

Just a little too big, those ones, I think. But the ServoCity set looks good to me -- and you tested them as well. Hope they come back into stock soon. Let's see -- $20 -- that would be between 1/50th to 1/70th the price of the JST brand tool!! THose are definitely better quality. But not _that_ better. Sheesh. They're off their rocker, for sure.

The key of course is to have the two different size crimp heads, side-by-side for a single action, complete crimp. The ServoCity tool has the convenient ratchet too, which really does help.

I'm so relieved to see there _are_ sanely priced tools out there. Thanks.

Hi there,

I'm the UK seller the Bryan referenced in his initial post, we do sell crimp tools capable of crimping JST crimps.

I completely agree with Bryan in his last post above .... it's often more preferable to have a crimp tool that crimps the core & insulator at the same time (one press), *however* such a dedicated side-by-side die arrangement will heavily restrict you in how many crimp variants that are crimpable by that tool ...we therefore also sell a crimp tool that's popular amongst hobbyists & casual users which have several dies & can crimp a large number of crimp pin types (across all the main manufacturers)....but it does mean you have to crimp first the core/wire, then the insulator....if you're a hobbyist then the small time overhead is probably worth tolerating for the extra flexibility the tool will give you (it'll earn its keep better), here's where to get them....

I have used tools like this before and usually without much success. No
doubt my lack of talent. But I have used tools like the PA-09 and the
PA-20 before and they are much better.

Same here Cam. I have a couple of el'cheapo tools in my box at home, both of which tend to damage the crimp, as much as doing the proper job. I have the PA-08 now, which does a much better job ... though still seems not quite right for the smaller crimps we work with. Far better priced than the Japanese US$700 version though!

Moreover, we've now found suppliers of pre-crimped XH plug/leadss on eBay. I've successfully ordered 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 12 pin variants, each with multi-coloured 15cm(?) wires pre-attached. (Just use the eBay search function.) This is by far the cheapest and easiest way to go, for this project's particular needs anyway. It does mean that you end up with a 'wire loom', instead of slightly tidier ribbon cable for the RTC/SD-card interface. But that has its advantages, too.

Lucky, yes perhaps. I have not come across this one before, despite much searching. The description is not 100% clear .. but crimping range 0.5 - ??  and mention of JST seems to indicate it would do the job. I probably would not have purchased it without more information myself (because I have bought others I thought were right, which were not.) But it's good to know now that you bought one and that it works OK. :-D I might get one myself, for comparison against PA-08, which is not perfect.

None of those tools are of any use to us. This discussion is about 0.5mm JST XH connectors. Thank you.

Hello
You should go and see this page
Awg meens American Wire Jauge and awg 28 to 24 refers to a wire  with a diameter between 0,321 and   0,511 millimeters
for  a terminal  there is a wire size  and a  crimping tool and only one :
a smaller wire will pop out from the terminal and a bigger one will overflow
I crimped all the terminals with these plyers with a good result  and as we say in French language : “ Dans les Régles de l’Art”
have a good day
I apologise for my poor english

They all refers to PH series and not to XH

And indeed yes, JST has a specific tool for each connector, but... have you seen the price ????
The quest for a cheap, working tool is due to original JST tool prices.
