ATAA Condemns the Unjust Detainment of Ekrem İmamoğlu, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality

The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) strongly condemns and protests the unjust detainment of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the democratically elected Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. This politically motivated action is a direct attack on democracy, the rule of law, and the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Turkish people.

Mr. İmamoğlu, a democratically elected leader chosen by millions has tirelessly served the people with integrity and dedication. His wrongful detention is a blatant attack on democracy, human rights, and the fundamental freedoms that Türkiye must uphold.

His detention is an alarming attempt to silence opposition voices, undermine free governance, and weaken democratic institutions in Türkiye. The persecution of political opponents through judicial means undermines the rule of law and threatens the principles of free and fair governance. Such actions not only suppress the voices of millions who support Mr. İmamoğlu but also erode public trust in Türkiye’s democratic institutions.

ATAA calls for his immediate release and demands that Turkish authorities respect the rule of law, fundamental freedoms, and the will of the people. ATAA also urges the international community to stand against this undemocratic act and to hold those responsible accountable for violating democratic norms and human rights.

Democracy cannot be silenced. Justice must prevail.
