JabariManwa: Before we start even recording songs, me and Romil and Kiko were making beats way back in like March, even before we got together and recorded, although a lot of these beats did not make it onto the album. We were doing all that and after that we started hanging out Shia [LaBeouf], he came to the house, he just put us on so much game.

Dom McLennon: I remember when Shia came to our house I think for the first time, immediately after our conversation ended, me and Jabari just went downstairs and I think we made like two or three tracks that night. That was like the first time that we like really really got into a flow of just you know being really ready to like start that next step and it was just it was a really really fun, exciting moment.

On GINGER Radio, Kevin revealed that they made over 100 tracks for the record. Eventually, the band listened to all the tracks they made and started cutting tracks based on which ones the group liked in that moment.

Ginger is the fifth studio album by American hip hop boy band Brockhampton. It was released on August 23, 2019, through the band's label Question Everything and RCA.[2] The album contains guest appearances from Deb Never, Ryan Beatty, and Slowthai.

On April 21, 2019, Kevin Abstract tweeted that he started the making of a new Brockhampton album.[3] In a Beats 1 interview with Zane Lowe, Kevin revealed that he could not finish his solo album, Arizona Baby, due to a lack of creativity and needed to work on something else, which marked the beginning of Ginger. In the same interview, producer Jabari Manwa said that he and fellow members Romil Hemnani and Kiko Merley made around 100 songs during the making of Ginger.[4]

In an interview with GQ in June, Kevin Abstract compared the sound of the album to Outkast's "Hey Ya!", and said the group's approach was taking lyrics about topics like anxiety and depression "and putting it on a song that a bunch of people could dance to".[5] On June 20, thirty seconds of a new song from the album titled "Sugar" was found on the app TikTok. Some fans also found that the song could be played in digital jukeboxes in some local bars. The full song was leaked online the next day.[citation needed]

On July 1, 2019, Brockhampton revealed the album title in a video posted to their social media. The video consisted of a shot of member Matt Champion tying his shoelaces while a snippet of "Love Me for Life" played in the background. The group performed "Boy Bye" in Spain on their summer festival tour.[2] The group announced that the album would be released in August 2019 in a clip of flashing images of the vocalists, with a snippet of "St. Percy", posted to social media on July 18.[7] Ginger merchandise was available on their website starting on July 23.

The band released the first single, "I Been Born Again", a song featuring all vocalists, on July 31, 2019.[8] The music video is black-and-white with a fisheye lens rolling on the ground and the members performing. The band went on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe on August 1 to talk about Ginger and the development of the group, where it was announced that the album would contain 12 tracks. On Kevin Abstract's Instagram Live, various snippets were shown days before the release of Ginger.

The second single, "If You Pray Right", was released on August 7, 2019, and has two parts. The music video featured the members playing instruments in space suits on a field and a snippet from another track, titled "Hood Still Love Me".

"Boy Bye" was added to the International Standard Recording Code database on August 6, 2019[9] and was released as a single on August 14, 2019. It's one of the rare occasions in Brockhampton where all current producers and vocalists are on a song together. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest on August 12, the date for Ginger's release was revealed to be August 23, 2019.[10]

The fourth single, "No Halo", was released on August 21, 2019, and features vocals from Deb Never and Ryan Beatty. The band held their own "Ginger Radio" on Beats 1 from August 22 to 24. On the release date of Ginger, they had a free live show called "Friday Therapy" at Fonda Theatre where they performed the full album. Guest artists that came and performed included JPEGMafia, Dominic Fike, 100 gecs.

Videos for "Heaven Belongs to You" and "Dearly Departed" were released on August 26 and 29, respectively. The former was released in tandem with the announcement of their Heaven Belongs to You Tour with special guest Slowthai, who also appears in the video. On August 28 and 30, they had interviews for Genius and Power 106 LA.[11]

Ginger was met with generally favorable reviews. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 75, based on 12 reviews.[13] The aggregator Any Decent Music gave the album a weighted average score of 6.5 out of 10, based on 7 reviews.[12]

On April 20, 2019, Kevin Abstract announced that he was working on the next BROCKHAMPTON album.[1] According to a Beats 1 interview with Zane Lowe, Kevin said that could not finish his solo album ARIZONA BABY and that he needed something else to work on. The other project became GINGER. In the same interview, it was said that up to 100 songs were created for GINGER.

Leading up to the release of the album, Kevin posted on social media saying that he would have another solo album released during the summer, alongside new BROCKHAMPTON music. In an interview he compared GINGER's sound to OutKast's hit song "Hey Ya!".[2]

On June 20, a song from the album, titled "SUGAR" was found on TikTok and jukeboxes in some local bars. The full song was soon leaked online. This may have led to GINGER's release being pushed back to August. It's been also suggested that "SUGAR" could have been the lead single for the album.

Members of BROCKHAMPTON were seen wearing merchandise with the words "GINGER" in public performances. On July 1, 2019, the theories that the next project would be titled "GINGER" were confirmed in a short teaser posted on BROCKHAMPTON's official social media. The video showed member Matt Champion tying his shoelaces while Merlyn Wood rapped a verse and had Bearface singing. The song would be later revealed to be "LOVE ME FOR LIFE."

Another snippet/teaser was released midway through the month, this time featuring images of vocalists flashing while "ST. PERCY" played. This teaser announced that the album would be released in August 2019.

The band released the first single and music video for the album, titled "I BEEN BORN AGAIN" on July 31, 2019. Around this time, snippets of some songs were shared, including "NO HALO", "ST. PERCY", and "GINGER." The second single, again with a music video, was released for "IF YOU PRAY RIGHT" on August 7. Shortly before the release of the "BOY BYE" video on August 14, 2019, it was confirmed in an interview with Ryan Seacrest that the album would be released on August 23. The final music video before the release of the album came on August 21 titled "NO HALO", featuring Deb Never and Ryan Beatty.

BROCKHAMPTON also had a Beats 1 radio show named GINGER Radio that ran from August 21-23. In its second episode, it was said that Dijon recorded two songs with the group, titled "150" and "DAYLIGHT." These songs did not make it on the final album.

On the release date of the album, they had a free live show called FRIDAY THERAPY at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, where they performed the full album plus other well-known BROCKHAMPTON songs. Guest artists that also performed at the venue included JPEGMAFIA, Dominic Fike, 100 gecs, and some features on the album (Deb Never and Ryan Beatty.)

On August 26, 2019, the group announced their HEAVEN BELONGS TO YOU Tour and released the music video for the title track, starring slowthai. It was also announced that slowthai would appear at most dates on the tour. Later, on September 10, three more dates and musical group 100 Gecs were added to the tour.

The band has released videos snippets for "LOVE ME FOR LIFE" with one being the first GINGER teaser, one featuring JOBA's verse only, and one featuring Kevin's verse.[6][7][8] The band has also done the same for "SUGAR", posting a video of Dom performing his verse on September 1, 2019.[9]

I really enjoyed this album and will continue to listen to it with my little girl. I love the messages of love and empowerment in the songs. Not to mention the fact that it celebrates being different but still knowing you have a place where you belong.

The influences on this record are sublimely combined; noise, extreme metal and punk fuse together in a glorious conglobulation of chaos. There is barely time to breathe throughout the entirety of it, aside from the six second opening track, a spoken word piece about the monster that is depression. This is a running theme throughout the album, with poignant lyrics creating a landscape of existential anxiety, dread, and frustration. As someone with experience in these matters, I would say that Ginger and crew have done a harrowingly spot-on job of grappling mental health battles into sonic form.

Despite the reigning discord, there are brilliant melodies in Dark Black, like satanic interpretations of pop; Skint and Hate push perfectly tuned dynamics through the heaviness. This is what makes me want to listen to this album over and over again. The final track Deterioration will leave any distortion cravings satisfied, its slow pace grinding this shit-storm to a close.

A lot of couples will also choose to put the formal family pictures into their album because these shots are important for them to preserve. The album pages will stand the test of time better than loose prints and are a good way to hold on to pictures of the people who support your marriage.

My album printer makes sure the pages in the album are expertly printed with balanced, true to life color. The moments in this album come to life with this expert printing technique and will be a gorgeous reminder of the wedding day for Ginger and Travis.
