Googling is really good advice, as grammar cannot be looked up in a J-J dictionary, googling is the next step. Most often Japanese people also are curious about the nuances of grammar, especially when comparing to another grammar form and when to use each, so for people who have switched to J-J that can be insightful.

Once your language skills are at a certain level (you can use monolingual dictionaries, etc), I would recommend getting a Japanese grammar dictionary that is written in Japanese. Ones written in English can be a bit limited (they might not cover unusual uses of stuff), so a good Japanese one is useful. Also a Japanese person you can ask millions of questions to always comes in handy.

Can you help me and provide me with youtube channels in Japanese that are focused on Japanese grammar and languages as a whole? It can be aimed at foreigner learning Japanese as well as at Japanese children learning how theirs language works. I reckon there has to be a lot materials about polite speech at the very least.

Thanks a lot. I am aware of Misa and sometimes is watch her when I need some additional input about some grammar point. However I am looking at the moment for channels that are in Japanese, not English. Are there any videos in Japanese about grammar at her channel?

It is in traditional JLPT format however it looks like a nice and easy way to train your listening comprehension while learning grammar. I think even somebody just starting out can watch it without pretty much any problems. So even beginners like myself can just immerse themselves in ton of material from the very early on. I think I will watch like 10 of those every day and keep it as the background noise.

After the N1 test, I feel motivated to really brush up on my grammar vocabulary, rather than simply cram. A lot of modern Japanese grammar only occur in newspapers and not really in normal daily spoken conversation so one really has to memorise the list and do serious rote learning unfortunately if mastery is the goal.

The first thing to know about basic Japanese grammar is how the sentence structure differs from English. English, and many other Romance and Germanic languages, are structured in the order of subject + verb + object:

When you learn Japanese grammar, you find that it has unique features, but some of them are quite easy to grasp! While there are difficulties with any language, with the right resources (and even a Japanese tutor to help you), Japanese can be just as easy to pick up as any other language!

You could use podcasts in Japanese for example, to help you get used to these key features of Japanese grammar. Or try out parallel texts in Japanese to learn by reading.

In spite of exceptions, you'll hear and see the key grammar over and over as you make daily contact with Japanese. So time to get started with Japanese! And if you need a bit of help on your journey, Japanese Uncovered is here for you.
