Ordered factors in regression-like models -- a brief introduction and a proposal

Abstract/Περίληψη: We start off with a slow-pace introduction to qualitative variables, or factors, and how to handle them in the context of regression models, GLMs, and alike. In the second stage we narrow down the focus to methods for handling ordered factors when they play the role of explanatory variables in such models. In the final part, we sketch a recent proposal, alternative to the current method of choice, aimed at simplicity of interpretation.

Short Bio: Professor Azzalini received his laurea in Statistics and Economics from the University of Padua in 1975. He continued his studies in Statistics at the Imperial College London and received his Master in 1979 and his PhD in 1981 under the supervision of Sir David Cox. He served as Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics of the University of Padua until his retirement in 2013.

Over the years his research work has spanned across a range of themes in statistical theory and methods. Specifically, the more recurrent topics have been: likelihood-based inference, longitudinal data analysis, nonparametric smoothing methods, development of parametric families of probability distributions, density-based cluster analysis, tools for computational statistics, as well as work in applied domains with over 100 research papers.

Prof. Azzalini is a fellow of RSS, a member of the Bernoulli Society, and an elected member of ISI. His editorial work includes journals like Applied Statistics, Scandinavian Journal of Statistics, Metron, the Bernoulli News etc.
