need python binaries built with debug mode

I'm debugging a python grpc client problem and need tracers that per the docs are only available when the grpc client was build with debug mode enabled:

> The following tracers will only run in binaries built in DEBUG mode. This is accomplished by invoking CONFIG=dbg make <target>

I can build the python module from source by following the instructions here. But it's not clear to me how to enable debug mode when building this way.

What's the best way to get python binaries built with debug mode?
