Serializing: alternatives to Protocol Buffers?

Hello,
If the grpcio package is agnostic to protobuf (comment) then I’m curious whether folks have tried other data de/serializing implementations, e.g. pickle for Python?
If yes, what’s the experience? If no, why not?
