Currently running 1.3.3, and i'm getting notifications of an update
being available - clicking the notification goes to the website to
download the current version 1.3.3

I went through the process of uninstalling my original version of
growl, before purchasing and installing the current version of
growl.
Can't find any other solutions that match my problem..

Wondering if theres a cache file or something I can thump and get rid
of these pesky notifications. Oh and they don't show in the history
either, another odd quirk.

If you're seeing an update notification then you also have 1.2.x installed.  Launch Activity Monitor.app, you'll see it there under the name GrowlHelperApp.

What if I'm getting this message on a fresh install of Lion that has
never had Growl installed before the app store version 1.3.3 and has
no running GrowlHelperApp?

You might have an app that has part of the 1.2 line of growl
