If you don't want to wait for an official GrowlMail update, and you
want to get GrowlMail working now, there is a way to patch it to work
with OS X 10.6.5. I tried it an it worked, but you do so at your own
risk. If you are comfortable with the terminal... follow the
instructions on this page:

http://langui.sh/2009/11/09/fixing-growlmail-letterbox-for-mail-4-2/

HOWEVER, in the middle of the page, the author lists 2 different ways
to patch the GrowlMail depending on where you have it located. When
you pick the right one, you will need to replace the text that he has
in RED with the two UUID's below, one for each line.

857A142A-AB81-4D99-BECC-D1B55A86D94E
BDD81F4D-6881-4A8D-94A7-E67410089EEB

Those are the new UUID's for Mac OS X 10.6.5 and the new Mail app.
(The way the bundle works is that Apple Mail will look inside a
plugins list of UUIDs to make sure there is a match with the one Mail
has and the OS. If they match, Mail will accept and integrate the [lug-
in. If there is no match, Mail will disable the plug-in for safety
reasons).

I remind you again, do this at your own risk. If you follow the
instructions exactly, you will have no problems. If after, you have
issues with Mail, manually remove the GrowlMail plug-in until an
official one has been patched and released. Hope this helps.

… please tell us what those problems are so we can fix or hack around them, so that the official release won't contain them.

We'll test it ourselves, of course, but we don't test every possible combination of settings GrowlMail has. (It would take way too long.) The bolder of you are the people who do that: Whatever your combination of settings is is probably more or less unique to you, so a problem may also be. If a problem manifests only when boxes X, Y, and Z are checked, we need to know that, but we won't on our own if we don't have those boxes checked.

So, if you have a problem after hacking your GrowlMail to work, please let us know, because we might not find about it otherwise (until we release the “fix” and start getting even more angry email).

The only reason I mentioned the word "problems" is that the author of
that page I referenced mentioned that. I have not encountered any
problems as of yet, but I was erring on the side of caution. I will
update my findings as need be.

I patched GrowlMail last night by opening the info.plist file inside the plugin and adding the following two lines:

<string>BDD81F4D-6881-4A8D-94A7-E67410089EEB</string>
<string>857A142A-AB81-4D99-BECC-D1B55A86D94E</string>

within <dict> and <array> near the bottom of the file. It has worked without any issues with 10.6.5 since doing that.

Do you think adding these lines to another plugin, such as Omnifocus will fix it too?

I fixed three different plug-ins for Mail by doing this.

It did not work on Omnifocus.
