Since notifications are limited to 5 lines by default, if a single line is too long it will take up two lines, and the bottom lines will be cut off.  Since my app displays song titles/albums that can be very long, I have to implement my own clipping code to make sure all my 5 lines are displayed.  This is kind of a hack, so I want to request a mechanism to have Growl clip long lines to a single line by truncating the tail or middle with an ellipsis.  Thanks.

We've taken the position that a notification is something that should be small. We have the checkbox you are referring to because some people about 6 years ago decided to argue on irc for 3 days straight about this, and finally I just had to make a decision on it.

Growl displays notifications, that's the bottom line. If it's more than 5 lines, is it really a notification anymore? Our thoughts are that no, these are not notifications, but something more. I can understand where you are coming from, but at the end of the day we feel that a notification should be some small tidbit of information, and if you want to know more you can click to see it. :)

Did you read my request? I'm not talking about changing the line limit. I'm saying that it would be nice if I could prevent long lines from spilling over into multiple lines, I.e. there should be a setting for long lines to be clipped, instead of wrapping.

I read it but misunderstood what you meant. Yay text communication.

That introduces some issues I can foresee, mostly since this would be a change in expectations since it's a change in behavior. That said we can definitely discuss it. So say you have 5 lines, and one of those lines was too long and needed to wrap, that scenario would need to be figured out. The other is if a single line is long enough to expand a notification to the height of the window.

I can file a ticket on this, or you can. If you do, then you can keep track of it probably a bit better. Let me know if you'd like me to file a ticket on it. Our tracker is at http://code.google.com/p/growl

The only issue I've run into isn't the 5 lines, but that if the notification contains a file path (/Users/name/path/to/some/file.ext) it can be hidden if it is too long because it doesn't wrap it there's no space to force a line break.

Right, I'm going to assume that is about the same length that Francis is talking about. Which is fine with something that has 2-3 lines, you could just wrap it. But there's other bits to it that just require some thought to make it right. For instance, can we somehow indicate that a line was wrapped without real issues there?
