i followed your steps but when i double-click the file in the Plugins directory after I forced Growl to quit from the Activity Monitor, I get the error that the file is already is installed and prompted to overwrite and after I clicked Yes to overwrite it gives an error installing.
thanks anyway for the tip but it is not working for me :(

Here's what I had to do.
1. Download a style to the desktop.2. Double-click to install from the file on the desktop3. Navigate to the ~/Library/Application Support/Growl/Plugins directory4. Force quit Growl from the Activity Monitor (otherwise I get an error that the file is already installed and prompted to overwrite, after which I am then notified there was an error installing.)5. Double-click the file that was installed to the ~/Library/Application Support/Growl/Plugins directoryI was then able to install without an error message, and the style now appears in my Growl displays panel.Hope that helps and is not just some FM that doesn't mean anything/help anyone else.

Yes, it only worked for me until reboot, and when I rebooted my system, Growl reverted to a stock theme and I had the same issues again where the installed styles were no longer listed. :-( Sorry for the wild chase.

Are you setting it as the default style or just for a specific app?
