I'll try it when I get home. Help me out with your configuration so I can try to reproduce the issue.

Also, do other applications work with Growl?

Thanks Chris
Ive only just installed growl and the only app in the applications was 500px uploader then yesterday i deleted an app and clean my mac started up saying did i want to totally delete the app or something like that and then next thing i know, clean my mac has appeared in the applications bar. Ive got a few apps running that growl should be picking up like dropbox as well but its not. Ive tried stopping Hazel and resarting it and also done the same with growl and still nothing.

So in hazel i created a folder (camera to iphoto) for taking pictures from this folder to iPhoto
- Set the name to import photos
- If all of the following conditions are met for the the file or folder being matched
- Kind, is, image
- Under do the following  ive used import into iPhoto into a folder called Photos from camera
- Added another line under that for display growl notification with pattern file, time, folder

The photos get moved from that folder into iPhoto and if the notifications are for my mac then it comes up n my screen with that notification but as soon as i change to growl i get nothing! I hope this has helped in some way Chris and thanks for trying for me

Maybe. I've never used Hazel, even though I know the author from irc back in the day. I'll try it this weekend and if I have problems I'll let you know.

Ok, so I've now tried the only other logical thing and that was to completely restart my mac as its always just in sleep and guess what, hazel has now appeared in my applications!!! Hooray!!!! Chris thank you for taking the time out for me on this one I really appreciate it :)

No problem. Do me a favor. Grab Growl Version Detective from our downloads page, and let's see what version of the framework he's using in there (if at all).

Think I posted to the wrong part again lol. You can tell I don't do this very often!
Ok so it's running growl version 2.0.1
Application version 1.2.2
Framework version 2.0
This list that shows up in growl version detective, is this the list on my mac that should be showing up in growl? The only things I have showing in growl are 500px uploads, Alfred, clean my mac and now hazel

Hello Ian

I am one of the Dropbox moderators, I noticed you mentioned it earlier on in your topic.

When Dropbox starts it checks if Growl is running and if so it will use it. If not It checks for Notification Center and if you have a system supporting it. It will use it and as a last effort if neither of the 2 notification systems are present you will see Dropbox start to use its built in notification system. It looks very similar to the Growl style Smoke but with a blue haze around the bubble.

In short if you want it to use Growl. Growl has to be first on start up.

Once Dropbox chooses any of its methods it will not go back and recheck later on during that run.

So,

If you Start Dropbox and then Growl, You would get Notification Center or custom notifications. Depending on setup.
If you Start Growl and then Dropbox. You would get Growl notifications
If you start Dropbox and your system supports Notification Center then start Growl. You get Notification center.

If you want to switch mid stream you would need to Quit Dropbox, make sure Growl is running and then restart Dropbox.

I have also noticed after a clean reinstall of my system, that some times you will not see Dropbox register with Growl, unless you allow Growl to start first after a reboot. Weird I know but nonethelss I have also noticed it myself.

As to me personally I always allow Growl to start first and it will be a long time before they pry Growl off my Mac.

Cheers,

Tom Hightower ~ thightower at the Dropbox forums.

ps I also use Hazel so Ill try to keep an eye out on this thread. If you have any other questions regarding it. The Dev of Hazel is a really personable guy and has helped me trouble shoot a few odd ball issue's. The only one I still know of personally involves using Total Finder and iTunes importing.

Noodle soft also has a forum should you wish to gain any recipes etc that may be of use to you. http://www.noodlesoft.com/forums/ I don't get there often but it has some good information.

pss. I like to use Growl as much as possible and I like to get Dropbox notifications out of my way at times. You may wish to look at the Bark plugin and configure Dropbox to use it. I like it so I can send Dropbox to Bark and Bark will send it to Notification Center. That way I get swipe to dismiss and also once set up with Bark. Notification Center will keep a history of your Dropbox events unlike normally when it just tosses them to the trash. http://barkplug.in/# Make sure and restart you system to get Bark and Notification Center working nicely. :)

Hi Tom
Thanks so much for that amazingly detailed reply I appreciate it very much. I've checked out that forum and is definitely somewhere ill be going a lot!

As for growl and Dropbox, not such good news. I'm still not getting growl to work grrrrr. I've tried deleting growl and reinstalling, I've tried strafing growl and then Dropbox, I've tried restarting my mac and still nothing. I must be doing something wrong but what it is I really don't know! Saying that though I'm not even getting notifications from Dropbox either and I have "show desktop notifications ticked in the preferences as well

One thing that gets most people,

Dropbox will not Growl if you make changes locally. It will only Growl if changes are made on another machine and or the web site. When I check my config etc. I always have a browser open and delete a simple txt file. Then wait for the sync and the Growl message.

Could this be your issue ?

I hate to be taking up Growl forum/group stuff with Dropbox related material. If you are still having issues we could more than easily take care of this at the Dropbox forums. I don't think Chris will kill us considering it is really Growl were talking about. :P

HALLELUJAH IT WORKS!!!

Tom you were right and I'm obviously in the category of "most people"
I made a change on the website and growl kicked in and now its showing inside growls applications. I can only thank the 2 of you for your help and advice. Tom, thanks for the links they're now saved for future use and I hope this hasn't been touch trouble for anyone. I can now get on with my life and stop thinking about growl 24/7 ha ha

Glad to help,

There are a few topics folks know for about 100% I will post to thats. Growl, Dropbox and 1Password.

All 3 are part of my love and passion for my Mac. Glad your sorted. Incidentally if you need help with any of the 3 you can find me at some point in their forums,.... as a participant here and a moderator at the later 2.

Cheers.
