Hi, so the appstore is kind of overszealous in its detection of
Growl. Please try Growl Version Detective, available here
http://growl.cachefly.net/Growl%20Version%20Detective1.2.2.app.zip and
see on the first tab whether it thinks you have any extra copies of
Growl you missed. You might also try ejecting your TimeMachine backup
drive if you have one, as sometimes the app store gets confused about
it as well.

I'm having the same problem with Hardware Growler. The app store says it's installed, but I don't see it, and the store won't let me re-download. Will the utility that you linked work for me as well, or do I need to do something specific for Hardware Growler?

I'm having a similar issue. Growl is installed on one volume (10.7.5) in /Applications, but if I boot from another volume (10.8) MAS thinks it's installed on 10.8. So some weeks ago I copied version 1.4 of the Growl.app from the 10.7.5 volume to the 10.8 volume. Recently I updated to vers. 2.0 on the 10.7.5 volume. But now, MAS won't update the 1.4 version on the 10.8 volume.  So I copied it over again.

Is there anything you guys can do to address this sort of problem?  how do you test different versions?

The utility should be able to be used to find HWGrowl installs, they
will get listed on the second tab of Growl Version Detective.

Unfortunately, app store issues such as its over zealous detection are
out of our immediate hands. We have filed bug reports with Apple on
the topic, but obviously they haven't been resolved yet. As for
testing different versions, I wind up deleting and readding things a
lot. Also, Im rarely off the development version for too terribly
long, only when I need to go back and confirm behavior in a previously
shipped version.

The utility did indeed find the problem. Some time ago I had grabbed a copy of the HWGrowl source to play with. Apparently MAS was finding the copy of the binary in the build directory and deciding that it was already installed. Cleaning the source tree fixed the problem. Thanks for the help.

I have had experience with this problem, and found the following always works.

1. Many times apps are installed but don't show in the apps menu but they can be found in the Launchpad, I have no idea why.
2. Disconnect any drives connected to the Mac as the app store looks for all locations
3. If the app is found in Launchpad remove it from there is necessary.
