Perl Growl::GNTP doesn't work with Growl 1.3.2

I have a Perl script using Growl::GNTP running on Ubuntu 11.10 which does not work with Growl 1.3.2 on Lion 10.7.2: the script itself hangs waiting for a reply from Growl, and the Growl icon in the Mac toolbar shows a beach ball on mouse-over.

I fished Growl 1.3.1 out of my Time Machine backup and tried that instead. Everything works perfectly.
