Hi guys - ive been having this problem for a while - Im on an imac 24"
running 10.5.8 - i just upgraded to growl 1.2 -
My growlmail does not respond at all to display configurations or any
configurations at all, really. I try to shut it off in both mail
and under sys pref>growl but it still displays notifications in smoke
style even when i specify otherwise. Also, when I have both enabled
growlmail in both Mail and Sys pref,
i get two notification messages upon new mail- one in smoke (always)
and one in my specified display style. This is very odd. I just want
growlmail to display in the style i choose.
Please Help. Thanks!

Then you have something else posting new-mail notifications in
addition to GrowlMail. Potential culprits include Adium and Google
Notifier (the latter with Waffle Software's Google+Growl plug-in).

No, I don't think so. Adium is never running and i dont have google
notifier - the only apps i have running growl are:

cyberduck
delivery status
firefox
growl menu
handbrake
hardware growler
istumbler
last.fm
transmission

- none of these have e-mail notifications -

thanks.

Do you have a Firefox extension installed that checks Gmail?

And, of course, make sure you scrolled all the way down in the
applications list.

The other thing to check would be whether you have multiple instances
of GrowlHelperApp running. You can check this using the Activity
Monitor.

If that's the case, run the Uninstall Growl app on the Growl disk
image, then reinstall Growl. (Don't touch GrowlMail—if this is the
case, GrowlMail is working fine.)

Only one of it, or more than one?

Try this:

<http://growl.info/hg/logging-scripts/archive/tip.zip>

Run EnableLogging, then receive some mail and get the two
notifications. Then, open this file in your favorite text editor:

Your Home folder
Library
Logs
Growl.log

That should tell you each notification and what application sent it.

When you've collected the evidence, run DisableLogging.

Did you wait around to receive a pair of mail notifications?
