I'm a big fan of Growl and GrowlMail, and I install every new version
as soon as I notice it.
So, I downloaded GrowlMail 1.2.4 today after seeing it in MacUpdate.
After some failures trying to install this new version, I went to the
Growl site, found out the GrowlMail installation fixer and ran it;
after this, the version 1.2.4 installer quit with a success message.
However, MailGrowl is not installed: it doesn't show up on the Mail
Preferences panel and there are no notifications when mail comes in.
I uninstalled and reinstalled GrowlMail several times with no success
(I even replaced my copy with a fresh one downloaded from Growl
site).

1. I supposed that the installation fixer would delete some file(s)
related to previous versions of MailGrowl. However, if – after runing
the fixer – I try to reinstall MailGrowl (after runing the uninstall
script) I get the same error message. This happened every time I
installed MailGrowl. It seems that the receipt lurks somewhere …

2. Is it possible to get a copy of GrowlMail 1.2.3?

Mail 3.6
GrowlMail 1.2.4
Growl
Safari 5.0.5
iMac 2 GHz PPC G5 Mac OSX 10.5.8

Is it in the correct folder?

Your Home folder
Library
Mail
Bundles

Not exactly; the Fixer deletes the installation receipt, which is an entry in a database, not a separate file.

Since the Fixer changed the installation result from failure to success, I would infer that you did have the problem the Fixer addresses, and the Fixer worked successfully, and now you have (or already had but had not yet reached) a different problem.

Yes, but let's see if we can get 1.2.4 working for you.

There is folder there called GrowlMail.mailbundle. It contains a
'Contents' folder and a 'Icon' file.

I mean a folder and not a package like Mailtags, for instance

Next question: If you run the following two commands in Terminal, what is the output?

defaults read com.apple.mail EnableBundles
defaults read com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion

Copy and paste both lines from here into the terminal window.

I too have the same problem as it doesn't work after installation.
I've deleted Growlmail then installed without luck
