When I set a notifications sound it always spits out the following
error when I'm notified it.

" Could not load and play sound file * "
(where * is the name of the sound)

This happens no matter what kind of notification it is or what sound I
choose (I've tried custom and system default sounds).

What can I do about this?

What version number does Growl show in the About tab of its preference pane in System Preferences?

Growl 1.2 (downloaded and installed recently)

This a screenshot of the error I receive.

I've tried everything from repairing permissions to installing older
versions of Growl. Nothing seems to help.

I've also tried the latest beta 1.2.1b5 with no luck.

Alright. It turns out the problem was not Growl at all. The file
com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist was missing. A file that runs
coreaudiod on system startup. Growl seems to rely on this for sound
notifications. Thus, sound notifications would not play.

I did resolve the issue by restoring com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist
to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/

If anyone is having this problem and needs detailed instructions on
restoring this file leave a message here. Apologies for the false
alarm, it's such a strange and obscure OS X issue and I have no idea
how it happened.

Thanks

I've noticed this as well. I don't know where to restore this file from, however. My backups don't contain it either.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

If you don't mind, go ahead and put those instructions into an email and send it to the list. If someone has this problem a year from now, it'd just be easier to be able to search for this than to try to get ahold of you.

Yup, would be appreciated if you could post the instructions.....and where to find the .plist file.

Yup, should have figured this out. Simple enough.

Don't know what the .plist was doing missing anyway. Thanks.

Hey guys, Im having the same problem. I checked, and the
com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist already exists in /System/Library/
LaunchDaemons and its the same as the file on the cd.

Still getting the http://grab.by/5Art error. Ive also tried putting
the mp3s in the /Library/Sounds aswell as ~/Library/Sounds neither
works.

Any ideas?

Using Snow Leopard, Growl 1.2.1

Thanks

In System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects are you able to hear a
sound when you click it?

Hey remyo

Thanks very much, the cusom sound didn't appear in the sound effects list under the sound preferences, but it did appear in the growl drop down. So I investigated why it wasn't showing up in the sound effects list, and it turned out to be that it only plays aif files. I was trying to play a mp3. Worked after i converted the files to aif.

Maybe growl shouldn't show anything other than aif's in its drop down, to avoid this confusion?

For me, Growl is able to play an MP3 just fine when I select it from the menu, although no sound (or error message) happens when I cause the actual notification.

Either way, Growl is *supposed to be* able to play MP3s, so we will not hide them.

Thats basically what happens for me as well, when you select fromt the growl sounds drop down it plays fine. But throws the error when trying to play when trigged by a notification. Im guessing when you select from the drop down growl plays the sound itself, but on notification growl tries to use the system sound effects or something to play the file?

That doesn't happen for me.

I just looked and you're exactly right.

This will all be fixed once we're using NSSound for all sound playback.
